Flow Birefringence of Viscoelastic Fluids

Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 1966
The flow birefringence of the Rivlin-Ericksen viscoelastic fluid and of Noll's simple fluid is theoretically investigated. The Maxwell-Lorentz field equations, the mechanical field equations and the constitutive equations are reduced to simplified ones in the weak limit of the electromagnetic plane wave.

A Multigrid Method for Viscoelastic Fluid Flow

SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, 2004
Summary: We study a multigrid finite element method for a viscoelastic fluid flow obeying an Oldroyd-B-type constitutive law. The multigrid method is a time-saving method in which the full nonlinear system is solved on a coarse grid, and subsequent approximations are generated on a succession of refined grids by solving a linearized problem.

Swelling of viscoelastic matrices by viscoelastic fluids

2018
A typical example of viscoelastic matrices is represented by polymeric particles devoted to the controlled release of active agents (drugs) that swell when put in contact with an external solvent, typically a physiological medium. Although, in general, physiological fluids can be considered Newtonian, this is not always the case, let us consider, for ...

On hydrodynamics of viscoelastic fluids

Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics, 2005
AbstractIn this paper, we study a hydrodynamic system describing fluids with viscoelastic properties. After a brief examination of the relations between several models, we shall concentrate on a few analytical issues concerning them. In particular, we establish local existence and global existence (with small initial data) of classical solutions for an

Theory of viscoelasticity of fluids

The Journal of Chemical Physics, 1985
By analytically continuing the stress tensor evolution equation used in our previous studies of static phenomena in fluids and solving the equation, we have derived some analytic formulas for dynamic viscosities as functions of the amplitude and frequency of oscillating shear rate.

Viscoelastic Solids and Fluids

2011
We now consider special cases of the constitutive relations (6.1.15), namely linear viscoelastic solids and fluids with linear memory under isothermal conditions in the present chapter and an approximate version of rigid heat conductors in Chapter 8. Some of the formulas are similar to those derived in the general case, and detailed proofs are omitted ...

Incompressible Viscoelastic Fluids

1994
In Part I, we discussed in detail the foundations of the bracket description of dynamical behavior, demonstrating how the generalized bracket is linked to the theories of both Hamiltonian mechanics and irreversible thermodynamics. Now it is time to discuss the various applications towards seemingly complex systems which are the main focus of this book.

Polymerizable viscoelastic fluids

Journal of Polymer Science Part A: Polymer Chemistry, 1990
AbstractRheological, elongational flow, and scanning electron microscopy measurements have been performed on cationic monomers associated with specific counterions. The monomers are formed through the reaction of allyl bromide and a variety of dimethylalkylamine derivatives.

Convection in Viscoelastic Fluids

1988
Nonequilibrium systems like Rayleigh-Benard convection in external temperature gradient or Taylor instability between rotating cylinders, have been much studied, theoretically and experimentally in recent years. Of particular interest are systems like Rayleigh-Benard convection in binary mixtures [1–5], or Taylor instability in counterrotating ...
