Soft‐Layered Composites with Wrinkling‐Activated Multi‐Linear Elastic Behavior, Stress Mitigation, and Enhanced Strain Energy Storage

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, exciting new bi‐/multi‐linear elastic behavior of soft elastic composites that accompany the activation of wrinkling in the embedded interfacial layers is analyzed. The new features and performance of these composite materials, including dramatic enhancements in energy storage, can be tailored by the concentration of interfacial layers ...

Comparative Wear and Friction Analysis of Sliding Surface Materials for Hydrostatic Bearing under Oil Supply Failure Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Hydrostatic bearings excel in high‐precision applications, but their performance hinges on a continuous external supply. This study evaluates various material combinations for sliding surfaces to mitigate damage during supply failures or misalignment and to discover the most effective materials identified for enhancing the reliability and efficiency of

Robocasting of a Water‐Based Biopolymer/WO3 Nanopowder Paste as a Precursor to Tungsten Carbide Lattices

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates a novel, additive manufacturing approach to produce complex, porous tungsten carbide structures using water‐based direct ink writing/robocasting. Leveraging a modified commercial printer and heat treatment, the process yields lightweight, electrically conductive 3D architectures capable of supporting a mechanical load.

Dynamic cluster formation determines viscosity and diffusion in dense protein solutions

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2019
Significance For living cells to function, proteins must efficiently navigate the densely packed cytosol. Protein diffusion is slowed down by high viscosity and can come to a complete halt because of nonspecific binding and aggregation.

Multiscale Modeling of Process‐Induced Defects in Fused Filament Fabrication‐Printed Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a predictive multiscale modeling tool for defect analysis of fused filament fabricated‐printed materials and their performance prediction using a mechanistic data science‐based reduced‐order modeling approach. Process‐induced defects are inherent to additively manufactured parts and significantly influence the performance of printed
