Viscous Damping in Flexural Vibrations of Bars

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1959
Abstract Energy dissipation in flexural vibrations is considered by introducing into the Timoshenko beam equation viscous-damping terms proportional to the time rate of extensional strain. Two modes of wave transmission arise from the roots of a quartic equation.

Proportional viscous damping model for matching damping ratios

Engineering Structures, 2020
Abstract A proportional viscous damping model is proposed to address the limitations of existing models that are either inaccurate or computationally costly in matching damping ratios. The proposed model allows easy curve-fitting to a given damping ratio distribution with negligible error and is remarkably accurate for matching a constant damping ...

The modal equations with viscous damping

Computers & Structures, 1991
Abstract The modal equations are developed for a viscously damped system in free vibration. The solution to these equations, containing all of the system damped mode shapes, is accomplished by a converging iteration scheme. A computer program is included to solve the problem.

A note on the viscous damping of a pendulum

The viscous damping of cnoidal waves

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1976
The viscous damping of cnoidal waves progressing over a smooth horizontal bed is investigated. First approximations are derived for the attenuation of wave height with distance and for the friction coefficient at the bed. Attenuation coefficients are larger than those predicted on the basis of shallow-water sinusoidal wave theory and, unlike the case ...

Transducers with Improved Viscous Damping

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2011
A miniature receiver or transducer with improved viscous damping. The receiver may be a moving armature receiver using shearing forces for damping the deflection of the diaphragm. In this receiver, the damping element, which may be a liquid, extend in a direction of the deflection of the armature or diaphragm. Another embodiment relates to a transducer

Optimal viscous damping of vibrating porous cylinders

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2019
We theoretically study small-amplitude oscillations of permeable cylinders immersed in an unbounded fluid. Specifically, we examine the effects of oscillation frequency, permeability and shape on the effective mass and damping coefficients, the latter of which is proportional to the power required to sustain the vibrations.

Numerical and Experimental Evaluation of the Viscous Damping in a Wellbay

23rd International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering, Volume 1, Parts A and B, 2004
Flow viscous damping and energy dissipation around the keels in a wellbay are experimentally and numerically investigated. Experiments have been carried out using a U-shape tube. Damping coefficients are evaluated from water elevation measurements.

Modelling Damping in Computer Simulations: Is All Damping Viscous?

Volume 1: 23rd Biennial Conference on Mechanical Vibration and Noise, Parts A and B, 2011
The standard damping model is the viscous dashpot for which the damping force is proportional to velocity. However, this simple model seems not to reflect real conditions where there may be viscoelastic effects, friction or air resistance. No general models for damping are available that can be developed from first principles and used in computer ...

Transition to a turbulent spectrum in the presence of viscous damping

Physical Review E, 1993
The local equation for wave turbulence is used to derive an expression for the minimum energy flux required to both overcome viscous damping and generate a Kolmogorov type of turbulent spectrum. This expression is verified numerically by solving the kinetic equation for the interaction of acoustic ...
