Numerical Modeling of Tank Cars Carrying Hazardous Materials With and Without Composite Metal Foam

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Large‐scale puncture models consisting of hazardous materials (HAZMATs) tank car with protective steel–steel composite metal foam (S–S CMF) are solved numerically. Tank car plate with added 10.91–13.33 mm thick S–S CMF layer does not puncture. Protective S–S CMF absorbs impact energy, reduces plate deformation, and prevents shear bands formation ...

Second law analysis of laminar flow in a channel filled with saturated porous media: a numerical solution

open access: yesEntropy, 2005
: This paper investigates entropy generation due to forced convection in a porous medium sandwiched between two parallel plates one of them being subjected to a uniform heat flux and the other one insulated.

Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

Research on Viscous Dissipation Index Assessment of Polymer Materials Using High-Frequency Focused Ultrasound

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Polymer viscoelasticity is crucial for mechanical performance, but conventional low-frequency methods struggle to isolate viscous loss—a key viscosity indicator.

3D (Bio) Printing Combined Fiber Fabrication Methods for Tissue Engineering Applications: Possibilities and Limitations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Biofabrication aims at providing innovative technologies and tools for the fabrication of tissue‐like constructs for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. By integrating multiple biofabrication technologies, such as 3D (bio) printing with fiber fabrication methods, it would be more realistic to reconstruct native tissue's ...

The effects of viscous dissipation and nanofluids as working fluid on the thermal development in an isothermal microchannel

open access: yesCase Studies in Thermal Engineering
This study investigated the effects of viscous dissipation on the characteristics of thermal development in an isothermal-isothermal circular microchannel, also known as Graetz Brinkman problem, analytically and highlighted a critical Brinkman number of ...

Viscous dissipation in explosive volcanic flows

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2005
Most models for magma flow in volcanic conduits during explosive eruptions assume isothermal ascent conditions due to the high heat capacity of the magma. Here we present a non‐isothermal axisymmetrical flow model that accounts for the temperature‐dependent viscosity of magma and viscous dissipation of heat.

Dynamics of viscous dissipative plane symmetric gravitational collapse [PDF]

open access: yesGeneral Relativity and Gravitation, 2010
We present dynamical description of gravitational collapse in view of Misner and Sharp's formalism. Matter under consideration is a complicated fluid consistent with plane symmetry which we assume to undergo dissipation in the form of heat flow, radiation, shear and bulk viscosity. Junction conditions are studied for a general spacetime in the interior

Dynamical approach to weakly dissipative granular collisions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Granular systems present surprisingly complicated dynamics. In particular, nonlinear interactions and energy dissipation play important roles in these dynamics.

Substrate Stress Relaxation Regulates Cell‐Mediated Assembly of Extracellular Matrix

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Silicone‐based viscoelastic substrates with tunable stress relaxation reveal how matrix mechanics regulates cellular mechanosensing and cell‐mediated matrix remodelling in the stiff regime. High stress relaxation promotes assembly of fibronectin fibril‐like structures, increased nuclear localization of YAP and formation of β1 integrin‐enriched ...
