Mapping and characterization of visna/maedi virus cytotoxic T-lymphocyte epitopes
CD8+cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) responses have been shown to be important in the control of human and simian immunodeficiency virus infections. Infection of sheep with visna/maedi virus (VISNA), a related lentivirus, induces specific CD8+CTLin vivo, but the specific viral proteins recognized are not known.

Vaccination delays maedi-visna lentivirus infection in a naturally-infected sheep flock
Background The Maedi-Visna (MV) lentivirus causes two slowly progressive eventually fatal diseases of sheep, Maedi, a progressive interstitial pneumonia, and Visna, a progressive demyelinating disease of the central nervous system.

Evolution of specific antibodies and proviral DNA in milk of small ruminants infected by small ruminant lentivirus [PDF]
The diagnosis of Small Ruminant Lentivirus (SRLV) is based on clinical signs, pathological lesions and laboratory testing. No standard reference test for the diagnosis of maedi visna has been validated up to the present, and it is puzzling that tests ...

PREVALENCE OF MAEDI-VISNA IN SHEEP HERDS
Progressive sheep pheumonia and maedi are terms that denote chronic virus sheep disease. Maedi-visna virus causes a disease named visna, which is a disease of nervous system with the symptoms of paresis and paralyses.

Experimental infection of sheep with visna/maedi virus via the conjunctival space
Experiments were performed to determine whether visna/maedi virus (VMV), a small ruminant lentivirus (SRLV), could infect sheep via ocular tissues. The EV1 strain of VMV was administered into the conjunctival space of uninfected sheep, and the animals monitored for the presence of provirus DNA and anti-VMV antibodies in blood.

Diagnosing infection with small ruminant lentiviruses of genotypes A and B by combining synthetic peptides in ELISA [PDF]
The major challenges in diagnosing small ruminant lentivirus (SRLV) infection include early detection and genotyping of strains of epidemiological interest.

Mutational analysis of a principal neutralization domain of visna/maedi virus envelope glycoprotein
We have shown previously that a type-specific neutralization domain is located within a 39 aa sequence in the fourth variable domain of gp135 in visna/maedi virus. We now show that neutralizing antibodies detected early in infection are directed to this epitope, suggesting an immunodominant nature of this domain.

Characterization of the lymphocytic alveolitis in visna-maedi virus-induced interstitial lung disease of sheep [PDF]
SUMMARYIn order to investigate the contribution of lymphocytes to interstitial lung disease in animals with visna-maedi infection, we studied in parallel bronchoalveolar cells and lung tissue from slaughterhouse animals (n = 29) and from colostrum-deprived lambs transtracheally inoculated with field isolates of visna-maedi virus (n = 9) or saline (n ...
