Visual Analog Scales for Assessing Surgical Pain

open access: yesJournal of the American College of Surgeons, 2005
Four visual analog scales were constructed to assess sensory and affective components of operative pain. The Surgical Pain Scales (SPS) measure pain while at rest, pain during normal activities, pain during work or exercise, and pain unpleasantness.Longitudinal data from 2,164 patients in a randomized trial of laparoscopic versus open hernia repair ...

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Lymphatic Venous Anastomosis Can Release the Lymphedema-Associated Pain of Upper Limb after Breast Cancer Treatment

open access: yesJournal of Reconstructive Microsurgery Open, 2018
Background Sometimes, chronic pain in the arm or chest could occur in postmastectomy patients. Although the pathology of the pain is unclear, the involvement of neurological mechanism, cicatricial contracture, or lymphedema is considered.

Patient perception of pain versus observed pain behavior during a standardized electrodiagnostic test [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Introduction: Clinicians often assume that observations of pain behavior are adequate for assessment of patient pain perception during procedures. This has not been tested during a standardized electrodiagnostic experience.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Determination of functional capacity of dentoalveolar apparatus in dental patients with temporo-mandibular joint dysfunction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
This paper presents data on functional state of masticatory muscles in dental patients with temporomandibular joint dysfunction. Total 128 dental patients with clinical signs of temporomandibular joint dysfunction have been examined using a visual analog

A spatial contrast retina with on-chip calibration for neuromorphic spike-based AER vision systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We present a 32 32 pixels contrast retina microchip that provides its output as an address event representation (AER) stream. Spatial contrast is computed as the ratio between pixel photocurrent and a local average between neighboring pixels obtained ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Utility of numerical and visual analog scales for evaluating the post-operative pain in rural patients

open access: yesIndian Journal of Anaesthesia, 2012
Background: Visual analog scales (VAS) and numeric analog scales (NAS) are used to assess post-operative pain, but few studies indicate their usefulness in rural illiterate population in India.
