Physiological Mechanisms Underlying Motion-Induced Blindness [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Visual disappearance illusions - such as motion-induced blindness (MIB) - are commonly used to study the neural underpinnings of visual perception. In such illusions a salient visual target becomes perceptually invisible.

Generation of Direction Selectivity by Isotropic Intracortical Connections [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
To what extent do the mechanisms generating different receptive field properties of neurons depend on each other? We investigated this question theoretically within the context of orientation and direction tuning of simple cells in the mammalian visual ...

Lateral Interactions in Visual Cortex

open access: yesCold Spring Harbor Symposia on Quantitative Biology, 1990
The findings presented in these studies have brought out different ideas concerning the mechanisms of processing in primary visual cortex than were held at the outset. Rather than thinking of receptive fields as being restricted in their extent, with the process of integration of the components of an image occurring at a much later stage along the ...

LIN28B Promotes Cancer Cell Dissemination and Angiogenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
Children diagnosed with high‐risk neuroblastoma have a 5‐year event‐free survival rate of less than 50% and poor outcomes after recurrence. Deregulation of the LIN28B oncogene can be addressed in these patients. Upregulation of LIN28B is shown to support the metastatic cascade.

Linking the Laminar Circuits of Visual Cortex to Visual Perception [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
A detailed neural model is being developed of how the laminar circuits of visual cortical areas V1 and V2 implement context-sensitive binding processes such as perceptual grouping and attention, and develop and learn in a stable way.

Infrared Neural Stimulation Elicits Distinct Molecular Pathways in Astrocytes Based on Laser Pulse Parameters

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
Infrared (IR) light evokes distinct calcium and water transport responses in astrocytes, depending on stimulation duration and protocol. This study uses widefield imaging and pharmacology to reveal differential engagement of astroglial signaling pathways.

Visual consciousness tracked with direct intracranial recording from early visual cortex in humans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
A fundamental question in cognitive neuroscience is how neuronal representations are related to conscious experience. Two key questions are: where in the brain such representations are located, and at what point in time they correlate with ...

Fabrication of a Stable, Low‐Cost, Patient‐Specific, Brain Phantom with Ventricles for Ultrasound Imaging

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Patient‐specific brain phantoms can replace animal trials, aid presurgical training, and enable in silico disease research on cerebrospinal fluid and ventricles. This study presents a method to create ventricular brain phantoms from three‐dimensional magnetic resonance images brain scans, resulting in durable, tunable, reproducible models that mimic ...

Key Trends and Insights in Smart Polymeric Skin Wearable Patches

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Intelligent polymers, which respond to various physical and biological stimuli, are explored for the development of skin wearable patches in biomedical applications. Smart polymers, also known as intelligent or stimuli‐responsive polymers, play a crucial role in the development of advanced wearable patches due to their versatility and softness.

Assessing differential effects of single and accelerated low‐frequency rTMS to the visual cortex on GABA and glutamate concentrations

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, 2020
Background The application of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for therapeutic use in visual‐related disorders and its underlying mechanisms in the visual cortex is under‐investigated.
