Interpreting the Rhetoric of Visual Advertisements
IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, 2021Visual media have important persuasive power, but prior computer vision approaches have predominantly ignored the persuasive aspects of images. In this work, we propose a suite of data and techniques that enable progress on understanding the messages that visual advertisements convey. We make available a dataset of 64,832 image ads and 3,477 video ads,

Interpretable visual reasoning: A survey
Image and Vision Computing, 2021Abstract Visual reasoning refers to the process of solving questions about visual information. At present, most visual reasoning models are mainly based on deep learning and end-to-end architecture. Although these models have achieved good performance, they are usually black boxes for users, and it is difficult to understand the basic rationales of ...

Visual interpretation of regression error
Expert Systems, 2019AbstractSeveral sophisticated machine learning tools (e.g., ensembles or deep networks) have shown outstanding performance in different regression forecasting tasks. In many real world application domains the numeric predictions of the models drive important and costly decisions.

Learning the Visual Interpretation of Sentences
2013 IEEE International Conference on Computer Vision, 2013Sentences that describe visual scenes contain a wide variety of information pertaining to the presence of objects, their attributes and their spatial relations. In this paper we learn the visual features that correspond to semantic phrases derived from sentences. Specifically, we extract predicate tuples that contain two nouns and a relation.

Visualization and Interpretation
2020An analysis of visual epistemology in the digital humanities, with attention to the need for interpretive digital tools within humanities contexts. In the several decades since humanists have taken up computational tools, they have borrowed many techniques from other fields, including visualization methods to create charts, graphs ...

Interpreting visual images, individually
Trends in Cognitive Sciences, 2002Visual images seem picture-like, but is this epiphenomenal or does it reflect a functional aspect of how they are represented in the brain? Visualising ambiguous pictures – those with more than one interpretation – provides one method for examining this issue.

Graphic Visualization in Literary Text Interpretation
2014 18th International Conference on Information Visualisation, 2014We here illustrate a possible approach combining existing technologies for Natural Language Processing (NLP), Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KRR) and Data Visualization in a coherent Decision Support System (DSS). The approach to the development of the system we are working on can be articulated in two main steps: the customization and ...
