American Journal of Surgery, 1948Abstract An unusual case of an infected enterogenous cyst of large bowel origin occurring in an incompletely obliterated vitelline duct has been presented. Of 217 children with vitelline duct anomalies, 85 (40%) had symptomatic lesions (mean age, 2.4 years). Forty-eight patients presented with rectal bleeding; 28, with intestinal obstruction; five, with abdominal pain; and four, with bilious umbilical drainage. An asymptomatic Meckel's diverticulum was discovered incidentally at laparotomy in 132 children.

Communicating Vitelline Duct Cyst
Radiology, 1964Embryologically, the omphalomesenteric, or vitelline, duct connects the yolk sac to the primitive midgut. This duct is normally obliterated in the 7-mm. embryo, but rarely it remains completely patent, and a fistulous communication results between the distal ileum and the umbilicus.
