Symptomatic vitelline duct anomalies in children.

A wide variety of anomalies may occur as a result of the vitelline duct (VD) failing to obliterate completely. Most reports on symptomatic VD focus on Meckel's diverticulum, while other anomalies are given little attention. A retrospective review was conducted at our institution.

Meckel’s Diverticulum & Vitelline Duct Remnants

The vitelline, or omphalomesenteric, duct usually regresses during the first trimester of fetal development. Several structures can remain if the duct fails to regress. The clinical presentation can be variable. The most common vitelline duct remnant is the Meckel’s diverticulum.

In twenty years, 66 infants and children with remnants of vitelline duct requiring surgery have been admitted. The patients were classified into three groups: patient vitelline duct (20 cases); Meckel's diverticulum as the primary surgical diseases (19 patients); and Meckel's diverticulum found incidentally at surgery (27 patients).
