Diabetic vitrectomy is usually performed to remove vitreous blood or to relieve traction of the macula. In addition to removing vitreous opacities and severing all anteroposterior connections of the posterior hyaloid face with a cutting and sucking probe, tangential traction in and around the macula is eliminated by sectioning preretinal membranes with

RETINA, 1981
The histopathologic and cytopathologic study of ocular fluids obtained for diagnostic purposes is presented. The analysis of fluid specimens with millipore filter, celloidin bag-cell block, and transmission electron microscopy techniques has proved to be effective for establishing and confirming clinical diagnoses.

Current Opinion in Ophthalmology, 1994
Proliferative diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of permanent vision loss. Vitrectomy for the complications of proliferative changes has resulted in preservation of vision. Recent studies have focused on the cellular and structural changes in patients with proliferative changes.

The development of a 25-gauge vitrectomy system represents a major step forward in vitreoretinal surgery. The main advantages of small-gauge incisions are reduction of surgical time, decreased postoperative inflammation, and fast postoperative recovery time. The use of this technique requires research, training, knowledge, and experience on the part of
