Vitreous Substitutes and Vitreous Surgery

1987
For many years ophthalmologists thought that the vitreous should not be disturbed surgically. In the process of learning to deal with more complex cases of retinal detachment, instruments and techniques were devised to operate successfully on pathological vitreous that clearly interfered with retinal reattachment.

Collagen Vitreous Substitute

Archives of Ophthalmology, 1972
Proctase-treated collagen vitreous substitutes were evaluated in monkey eyes. Nonirradiated viscous collagen solutions formed cloudy white opacities immediately after injection into the vitreous cavity. The vitreous turbidity did not completely clear during two years of observation. Collagen gels, formed by ultraviolet irradiation of collagen solutions,

Fluorinated Oils as Experimental Vitreous Substitutes

Archives of Ophthalmology, 1986
Two kinds of fluorinated oils (a fluorosilicone oil and a perfluoroether [Freon E15]) that have a higher density than water were evaluated as long-term vitreous substitutes. Vitreous compression using perfluoropropane gas was performed to create a space for the vitreous substitute in rabbit eyes.

Biocompatibility of Polyvinylalcohol Gel as a Vitreous Substitute

Current Eye Research, 2006
Polyvinylalcohol (PVA) hydrogel cross-linked by gamma irradiation was assessed as a possible vitreous substitute. From a series of experiments, rise of intraocular pressure and inflammatory changes in the vitreous cavity after operation were observed in some cases. Crab-eating macaques were used for this experiment. PVA gels were injected into vitreous

Injectable cross-linked hyaluronic acid hydrogels with epigallocatechin gallate loading as vitreous substitutes

open access: yesInternational Journal of Biological Macromolecules
[[abstract]]Hyaluronic acid (HA) serves as a vitreous substitute owing to its ability to mimic the physical functions of native vitreous humor. However, pure HA hydrogels alone do not provide sufficient protection against potential inflammatory risks ...

Collagen Vitreous Substitute

Archives of Ophthalmology, 1974
Proctase-treated collagen gels were injected into the vitreous cavity in 16 patients with retinal detachments that were considered inoperable by current scleral buckling techniques. Opacification of the gels and a transient inflammatory response were observed, but the vitreous cavity cleared within two weeks in 11 of the 16 eyes (69%).

Vitreous Substitutes in Vitreoretinal Surgeries

International Journal of Ophthalmic Pathology, 2016
The vitreous is an inert, transparent, colorless, hydrophilic gelatinous structure that fills the space between the lens and the retina. It maintains the intra ocular pressure and is important in maintaining transparency of the media for maximum photon transmission to the retina.

Experimental Vitreous Substitutes

2022
