VNF Placement and Chaining in Distributed Cloud

2016 IEEE 9th International Conference on Cloud Computing (CLOUD), 2016
This paper presents a model for Virtual Network Function (VNF) placement and chaining across Cloud environments. We propose a new analytical approach for joint VNFs placement and traffic steering for complex service chains and different VNF types. A custom greedy algorithm is also proposed to compare with our solution.

Placement and Routing of VNFs for Horizontal Scaling

2019 26th International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT), 2019
To deploy a wide range of services, improve network flexibility and facilitate the deployment and maintenance of network services, virtualization of network functions promises to make the networks more agile and efficient. Network functions virtualization (NFV) enables network service providers to deal with the increase of traffic of data and the ...

Strategies for VNF Placements in Large Provider Networks

Optical Fiber Communication Conference, 2017
We examine three strategies of VNF placement in a provider network: static service chains; seamless VNF duplication and VNF-dynamic-splitting. A constrained optimization applied to a large provider evaluates these strategies and showcases cost-latency trade-off.

Accommodating Dynamic Traffic Immediately: A VNF Placement Approach

ICC 2019 - 2019 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC), 2019
Network function virtualization has become a promising technology recently. To accommodate dynamic traffic such as burst, NFV can scale virtual network functions (VNFs) across several physical servers, which is known as horizontal scaling, or enlarge the capacity of a VNF leveraging idle resources in one physical server, which is called vertical ...

IllumiCore: Optimization Modeling and Implementation for Efficient VNF Placement

2021 International Conference on Software, Telecommunications and Computer Networks (SoftCOM), 2021
Network Function Virtualization (NFV) enables telecommunication operators to place and allocate resources dynamically to address the needs of Internet of Things (IoT), Intelligent Edge Computing (IEC) and emerging 5G services in a highly efficient manner. The efficient Virtual Network Function (VNF) placement and deployment largely depend on optimizing

Reliability-Aware VNF Placement Using a Probability-Based Approach

IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management, 2021
Network function virtualization (NFV) is a new network architecture concept that simplifies the deployment of network services and improves service management. However, it is challenging for a network service provider (NSP) to decide where to place virtual network functions (VNFs).

Dynamic VNF Chains Placement for Mobile IoT Applications

2019 IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM), 2019
Empowered by computing at the network edge, data sensed from Internet of Things (IoT) devices can be processed by various IoT applications stored in the nearby cloudlets to reduce the response time between the IoT devices. Together with the recently wide- studied network slicing and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) paradigm, IoT edge computing ...

Distributed Approach to Adaptive VNF Manager Placement Problem

2019 20th Asia-Pacific Network Operations and Management Symposium (APNOMS), 2019
Network function virtualization (NFV) has been a promising approach to flexible and scalable deployment of network services. In NFV management and orchestration (NFV-MANO) architectural framework, VNF managers (VNFMs) should be deployed to manage the lifecycle of virtualized network functions (VNFs). VNFM placement problem (MPP) is to deploy VNFMs that

Energy Efficient Algorithm for VNF Placement and Chaining

2017 17th IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Cluster, Cloud and Grid Computing (CCGRID), 2017
This paper addresses energy efficient VNF placement and chaining over NFV enabled infrastructures. VNF placement and chaining are formulated as a decision tree search to overcome this NP-Hard problem complexity. The proposed approach is an extension of the Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) method to achieve energy savings using physical resource ...

Mobility-aware VNF placement in the LTE EPC

2017 IEEE Conference on Network Function Virtualization and Software Defined Networks (NFV-SDN), 2017
Traditional network infrastructure is facing significant challenges to support the growing bandwidth, coverage, and latency requirements of users, and to support new 4G and 5G use-cases. As a solution, telecom operators are looking to implement Network Function Virtualization (NFV) in future networks.
