Composition and Provenance of Victoria Group Sandstones in Southern North Victoria Land, Antarctica

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, Volume 69, Issue 3, September 2026.
Three distinct source areas contributed to sandstones of the Victoria Group within the Transantarctic Basin in southern North Victoria Land. During the Permian, quartzose sandstones were derived from erosion of the local Ross Orogen, likely from an uplifted swell in the area of today's Ross Sea, the Ross High.

Submarine volcanoes along the Aegean volcanic arc

open access: yesTectonophysics, 2013
Abstract The Aegean volcanic arc has been investigated along its offshore areas and several submarine volcanic outcrops have been discovered in the last 25 years of research. The basic data including swath bathymetric maps, air-gun profiles, underwater photos and samples analysis have been presented along the four main volcanic groups of the arc. The

Along-arc, inter-arc and arc-to-arc variations in volcanic gas CO 2 /S T ratios reveal dual source of carbon in arc volcanism

Earth-Science Reviews, 2017
Abstract Some 300–600 Tg of volatiles are globally vented each year by arc volcanism. Such arc gas emissions have contributed to past and present-day evolution of the Earth atmosphere and climate by recycling mineral-bound volatiles subducted along active slabs. Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and total sulphur (S T ) are, after water, the major components of

Volcanic and tectonic features of Shirahama Bank in the northern Ryukyu Arc: Implications for cross-arc volcanism controlled by arc-parallel extension

Marine Geology, 2021
Abstract This paper presents volcanic and tectonic features of Shirahama Bank, an unexplored shallow submarine edifice in the northern Ryukyu Arc which was previously poorly mapped, and consequently the nature of its volcanism and tectonism have been poorly understood.

Quaternary Volcanism in the Cascade Arc

Elements, 2022
The Cascade arc has produced a remarkable diversity of volcanic rocks over the Quaternary period. The major stratovolcanoes that define the arc front are dominated by eruptions of andesitic and dacitic intermediate magmas, produced largely by fractionation, melting, assimilation, and mixing within the crust.

The role of transcurrent intra‐arc tectonics in the configuration of a volcanic arc

Terra Nova, 1992
SUMMARYField investigations show that Plio‐Quaternary Mexican and Quaternary Ecuadorian volcanic arcs are coeval with intra‐arc transcurrent or transtensional tectonics with motions along faults parallel or subparallel to the arc. This relationship can also be observed in the Quaternary Kamchatka arc. These arcs have an anomalously wide distribution of

Natural gamma-radiation in the Aeolian volcanic arc

Applied Radiation and Isotopes, 2001
Pulse-height distributions of gamma-rays, obtained with a field NaI(Tl) scintillation spectrometer in numerous sites of the Lipari and Vulcano islands (Aeolian volcanic arc, Italy), were measured to determine the U, Th and K concentrations of the bedrock and the relative values of the air absorbed dose rate.

Volcanic Arcs and Outer Arcs

2011
Primitive magma has been found to finally solidify as a granitic pluton after transformation to dacitic magma of a chemical composition identical to the composition of the upper continental crust. This granitic pluton and the associated cumulate also have been found to form the two-layered continental crust.

Volcanostratigraphy of arc volcanic sequences in the Kohistan arc, North Pakistan: volcanism within island arc, back-arc-basin, and intra-continental tectonic settings

Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, 2004
Abstract The Kohistan arc was initiated, offshore of Asia, during the mid-Cretaceous above northward subducting, Tethyan oceanic crust. The arc sutured to Asia c. 90 Ma ago. Subduction of oceanic crust beneath the arc continued until Indian Plate continental rocks began to underthrust the arc c. 50 Ma ago.
