Non-parametric estimation of temperature response to volcanic forcing
Journal of Geophysical Research: AtmospheresLarge volcanic eruptions strongly influence the internal variability of the climate system. Reliable estimates of the volcanic eruption response as simulated by climate models are needed to reconstruct past climate variability. Yet, the ability of models to represent the response to both single-eruption events and a combination of eruptions remain ...

An Energy Transport View of ENSO Responses to Volcanic Forcing
2023El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is one of the major climate phenomena impacting the globe. When a volcanic eruption happens, how ENSO will respond has still no consensus in proxy data though climate models tend to have an El Niño tendency.

Drag force simulation in explosive volcanic flows
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2015This paper focuses on the interphase drag force simulation of volcanic flows by means of mixture formulation with velocity nonequilibrium. Numerical simulations are performed on a volcanic gas-ash mixture collision and the influence of the drag force is verified on a number of cases.

Climate Dynamics, 2004
Using multi-millenium simulations performed with the three-dimensional climate model ECBILTCLIO, we analyze how variations in the external forcing can excite low-frequency modes of climate variability. We find that prescribing an idealized, abrupt decrease in solar irradiance can trigger a large perturbation of the oceanic thermohaline circulation (THC)

A statistical volcanic forcing scenario generator for climate simulations [PDF]
The climate system is continuously affected by forcings that add to its inherent variability. Recently, the dominant influence shifted from mostly natural factors to the rapidly increasing anthropogenic greenhouse gas and aerosol forcing. Climate change simulations for the 21st and 22nd centuries then employ possible story lines of human socio‐economic

Volcanic forcing of oxygenation dynamics in the mid-Proterozoic
Large Igneous Province (LIP) volcanism is commonly considered to have driven ocean deoxygenation and associated mass extinctions during the Phanerozoic. However, the impacts and feedback mechanisms associated with LIP emplacement in the prevailingly low-oxygen Precambrian environment remain poorly understood.Longfei Sun +11 more

On the dependency of simulated volcanically-forced variability to model configuration
2020<p>Several uncertainties affect the simulation of the climatic response to strong volcanic forcing by coupled climate models, which primarily stem from model specificities and intrinsic variability. To better understand the relative contribution of both sources of uncertainties, the Model Intercomparison Project on the climatic ...

Saturation in forcing efficiency and temperature response of large volcanic eruptions
Journal of Geophysical Research: AtmospheresWe investigate the climatic effects of volcanic eruptions spanning from Mt.\ Pinatubo-sized events to super-volcanoes. The study is based on ensemble simulations in the Community Earth System Model Version 2 (CESM2) climate model using the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model Version 6 (WACCM6) atmosphere model.

Radiative forcing by volcanic aerosols from 1850 to 1994
Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 1999We use our detailed radiative transfer model and the latitude‐altitude distributions of zonal mean optical properties for the Pinatubo aerosol to calculate the time evolution of its instantaneous radiative forcing. We represent the zonal mean of this radiative forcing in terms of the zonal mean optical depth of the Pinatubo aerosol, together with the ...
