Volcanic Tremor*

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 1950
Abstract It is proposed that volcanic tremor originates in the vibration of laminae which are partly freed by the differential tilting of the surface of the earth around a volcanic vent during an eruption. The topographic evidence around Kilauea caldera is examined and a probable range of the free vibrating lengths is determined.

On possible causes of volcanic tremor

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1975
The volcanic eruptions of different types are followed by volcanic tremor that is supposed to be initiated by the moving of the gases along the vent. Under some conditions the gas flow velocities can reach sonic values. The volcanic tremor is produced by the self-oscillations, which in turn are generated by the transition of subsonic to supersonic gas ...

Source mechanism of volcanic tremor

Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 1982
Low‐frequency (<10 Hz) volcanic earthquakes originate at a wide range of depths and occur before, during, and after magmatic eruptions. The characteristics of these earthquakes suggest that they are not typical tectonic events. Physically analogous processes occur in hydraulic fracturing of rock formations, low‐frequency icequakes in temperate ...
