Plant–herbivore interactions: Combined effect of groundwater level, root vole grazing, and sedge silicification

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2021
Accumulation of silica (Si) by plants can be driven by (1) herbivory pressure (and therefore plant–herbivore interactions), (2) geohydrological cycles, or (3) a combination of (1) and (2), with (1–3) possibly affecting Si concentration with a 1‐year ...

Discovery of a Novel Coronavirus in Swedish Bank Voles (Myodes glareolus)

open access: yesViruses, 2022
The unprecedented pandemic COVID-19, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), with bats as original reservoirs, has once again highlighted the importance of exploring the interface of wildlife diseases and human health.

A Brain‐Wide Atlas of Astrocytic Oxytocin Receptors Reveals a Glial Basis for Nucleus Accumbens Modulation of Affiliative Behavior

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The cellular actors of oxytocin signaling are under intense scrutiny. A brain‐wide anatomical and functional analysis in mice and rats reveals widespread expression of oxytocin receptors in astrocytes. These receptors are functionally active and, in the nucleus accumbens, selectively regulate male social affiliation.

Detection and Molecular Characterization of Giardia and Cryptosporidium spp. Circulating in Wild Small Mammals from Portugal

open access: yesAnimals, 2023
Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp. are important diarrhea-causing protozoan parasites worldwide that exhibit broad host ranges. Wild small mammals can harbor host-adapted and potentially zoonotic species of both parasites. The aim of this study was to

New techniques for old bones: Morphometric and diffeomorphometric analysis of the bony labyrinth of the Reilingen and Ehringsdorf Neandertals

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Neandertals are known to possess very distinctive traits in their bony labyrinth morphology, such as an inferiorly positioned posterior canal and a very low number of turns in the cochlea. Hence, the inner ear has been often used to assess the Neandertal status of fragmentary fossils.

Diet of bird‐like troodontid dinosaurs: synthesis of a contentious clade

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Troodontidae is a clade of small‐to medium‐sized maniraptoran theropods that mainly lived in Laurasia (modern Asia, North America and Europe) during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods and are believed to have had a variety of diets. The uniqueness of troodontid teeth suggests that they diverged from the typical flesh‐based diet of non‐avian ...

Association between Outlying Values in Body Condition Indices in Small Mammals and Their Habitats

open access: yesLand
Habitat type and habitat change are very important factors in the body condition of small mammals that inhabit them. The response can be positive, increasing, or the opposite, decreasing body condition. We analyzed outliers of the body condition indices (

Frenkelia parasites in a small mammal community. Dynamics of infection and effect on the host

open access: yesParasite, 2004
A community of small mammals, Clethrionomys glareolus, Arvicola terrestris, Microtus avalis, M. agrestis, M. subterraneus, Apodemus spp. and Sorex spp., was studied as hosts of Frenkelia glareoli and F. microti in Franche-Comté (France).

Grazing by sheep Ovis aries reduces island populations of water voles Arvicola amphibius

open access: yesFauna Norvegica, 2014
The population of water voles Arvicola amphibius was surveyed on 21 islands in the Solvær archipelago, northern Norway, in August 2012; 11 islands with semi-wild domestic sheep Ovis aries and 10 islands without sheep. Signs from water voles are very easy

No evidence for a trade-off between reproductive investment and immunity in a rodent. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Life history theory assumes there are trade-offs between competing functions such as reproduction and immunity. Although well studied in birds, studies of the trade-offs between reproduction and immunity in small mammals are scarce.
