Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Compact laser system for a laser-cooled ytterbium ion microwave frequency standard

open access: yes, 2019
The development of a transportable microwave frequency standard based on the ground-state transition of $^{171}\mathrm{Yb^{+}}$ at ~12.6 GHz requires a compact laser system for cooling the ions, clearing out of long-lived states and also for ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

A Novel Split-Ring Resonator and Voltage Multiplier based Rectenna Design for 900 MHz Energy Harvesting Applications [PDF]

open access: yesRadioengineering, 2018
This paper proposes a novel rectenna design for the compact RF energy harvesting system operating at 900 MHz. The rectenna design is based on a probe fed split-ring resonator on an elliptical slotted ground plane and an RF-DC rectifying circuit in the ...

Energy harvesting from conducted electromagnetic interference of fluorescent light for Internet of Things application

open access: yesETRI Journal, 2022
A novel energy harvesting technique that uses conducted electromagnetic interference as an energy source is presented. Conducted EMI generated from fluorescent light using a switched-mode power supply was measured and modeled as an equivalent voltage ...
