Numerical study of dam-break fluid flow using volume of fluid (VOF) methods for different angles of inclined planes

SIMULATION, 2021
In this paper, the effects of water on obstacles in dam-break flow for different angles of the inclined planes have been numerically examined. The presented computational data are compared with data from the experiment and computational simulation data of other authors.

Transient simulations of cavitating flows using a modified volume-of-fluid (VOF) technique

International Journal of Computational Fluid Dynamics, 2008
In this study, transient 2D/axisymmetric simulations of cavitating flows are performed using a modified 'Volume-of-Fluid' (VOF) technique. Simulation of the cavitation is based on a homogenous equilibrium flow model. To predict the shape of the cavity, the Navier-Stokes equations in addition to an advection equation for the liquid volume fraction are ...

Volume-of-fluid (VOF) simulations of rise of single/multiple bubbles in sheared liquids

Chemical Engineering Science, 2010
Abstract The understanding of the lift force, which governs the lateral migration of bubbles, is important to improve closures for continuum flow models that are used to simulate large-scale dispersed gas–liquid flows. In the present work, the effect of bubble size/shape and more importantly the effect of neighboring bubbles on the magnitude and ...

Finite element analysis of transient fluid flow with free surface using VOF (volume‐of‐fluid) method and adaptive grid

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids, 1998
Summary: The volume-of-fluid (VOF) method is adopted for the finite element analysis of transient fluid flow with a free surface. In particular, an adaptation technique for generating an adaptive grid is incorporated to capture a higher resolution of the free surface configuration.

Optimization of a High Pressure Swirl Injector by Using Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) Method

ASME 2010 10th Biennial Conference on Engineering Systems Design and Analysis, Volume 3, 2010
In this paper, the effects of various geometric parameters of a high pressure swirl Gasoline Direct Injector (GDI) on the injection flow quality are investigated. The two-dimensional axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) method were employed for simulation of the formation mechanism of the liquid film inside the ...

Two phase analysis of sloshing in a rectangular container with Volume of Fluid (VOF) methods

Ocean Engineering, 2013
Abstract Free surface oscillations of a liquid confined in a closed container (sloshing phenomenon) are an important issue when big amounts of liquid are industrially transported. The phenomenon involves two fluids that share a free surface boundary separating them, normally the density of the upper fluid is several orders of magnitude less than the ...

Effect of dynamic contact angle in a volume of fluid (VOF) model for a microfluidic capillary flow

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2009
We perform three-dimensional numerical and experimental study of the dynamic contact angle using volume of fluid (VOF) method applied to microfluidic channels with integrated pillars. Initially, we evaluated different dynamic contact angle models (hydrodynamic, molecular kinetic and empirical) for capillary filling of a two-dimensional microchannel ...

A machine learning approach for curvature computation leveraging volume of fluid (VOF) height function

AIP Conference Proceedings
The calculation of the curvature in Volume of Fluid (VOF) methods is still a challenge, and common approaches involve curve or surface fitting based on volume fractions. In this work, we explore an alternative approach for curvature computation in VOF simulations employing machine learning. The neural network establishes a correlation between curvature

Analysis of the volume of fluid (VOF) method for the simulation of the mucus clearance process with CFD

Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering, 2019
The clearance of mucus through coughing is a complex, multiphase process, which is affected principally by mucus viscosity and airflow velocity; however, it is also critically affected by the thickness of the two layers of mucus-the serous and gel layers-and oscillation level. The present study examines the effects of the latter parameters more closely.
