Ludwig von Bertalanffy was the creator of general systems theory (GST) – he coined the term, developed it in detail in his many writings, and was a key part of the group which took it forward and spread the concept. Indeed, the systems movement would not have taken the form it did without Bertalanffy – for while holistic thinking has arisen in many ...

Stochastic von Bertalanffy models, with applications to fish recruitment
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 2007We consider three individual-based models describing growth in stochastic environments. Stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with identical von Bertalanffy deterministic parts are formulated, with a stochastic term which decreases, remains constant, or increases with organism size, respectively.

A forgotten message? von Bertalanffy's puzzle
Kybernetes, 2006PurposeThis paper aims to celebrate Felix Geyer's many contributions to the systems movement. He participated from the beginning, with the energy that has become his hallmark. The area of systems studies was introduced in The Netherlands in about 1970, mainly through the activities of the Systeemgroep Nederland or Dutch Systems Group, initiated by Ab ...

Minor extension of the von Bertalanffy growth theory
Fisheries Research, 1990The growth of “Growing Sealife”™ plastic squid was tested against the principles of the von Bertalanffy growth theory. The von Bertalanffy growth curve fits the data well on visual inspection, although the Schnute curve actually provides a statistically superior fit.

Ludwig von Bertalanffy's early system approach
Systems Research and Behavioral Science, 2009AbstractMost of what Bertalanffy published in the field of ‘organismic’ biology was written in German and is thus not widely known. In order to understand the development and meaning of his ‘general system theory’, those early works are essential. In this paper, I therefore focus on key aspects of his ‘system theory of life’, both on the level of ...
