Flow Visualization Study of the F-14 Fighter Aircraft Configuration [PDF]

open access: yes
Water tunnel studies were performed to qualitatively define the flow field of the F-14. Particular emphasis was placed on defining the vortex flows generated at high angles of attack.

A Resolution Independent Solution for Confined Axisymmetric Vortex Breakdown Flow

open access: yesJournal of Fluid Science and Technology, 2007
Numerical simulation is performed for the vortex breakdown flows induced in a cylindrical container with rotating top disk. Solutions are obtained for the parameter ranges where steady axisymmetric flows are stable with respect to asymmetric disturbances.

Experimental and analytical study of the longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of analytically and empirically designed Strake-wing configurations at subcritical speeds [PDF]

open access: yes
Sixteen analytically and empirically designed strakes have been tested experimentally on a wing-body at three subcritical speeds in such a way as to isolate the strake-forebody loads from the wing-afterbody loads.

Creating Artificial Ice States Using Vortices in Nanostructured Superconductors

open access: yes, 2009
We demonstrate that it is possible to realize vortex ice states that are analogous to square and kagome ice. With numerical simulations, we show that the system can be brought into a state that obeys either global or local ice rules by applying an ...

Vortex breakdown incipience: Theoretical considerations [PDF]

open access: yes
The sensitivity of the onset and the location of vortex breakdowns in concentrated vortex cores, and the pronounced tendency of the breakdowns to migrate upstream have been characteristic observations of experimental investigations; they have also been ...

Electric generation of vortices in an exciton-polariton superfluid

open access: yes, 2012
We have theoretically demonstrated the on demand electric generation of vortices in an exciton-polariton superfluid. Electric pulses applied to a horseshoe-shaped metallic mesa, deposited on top of the microcavity, generate a non-cylindrically symmetric ...

New Findings by High-Order DNS for Late Flow Transition in a Boundary Layer

open access: yesModelling and Simulation in Engineering, 2011
This paper serves as a summary of new discoveries by DNS for late stages of flow transition in a boundary layer. The widely spread concept “vortex breakdown” is found theoretically impossible and never happened in practice.

Water-tunnel and analytical investigation of the effect of strake design variables on strake vortex breakdown characteristics [PDF]

open access: yes
A systematic water-tunnel study was made to determine the vortex breakdown characteristics of 43 strakes. The strakes were mounted on a 1/2-scale model of a Langley Research Center general research fighter fuselage model with a 44deg leading-edge-sweep ...

Viscous flows in rotating pipes with internal cavities and related vortex breakdowns [PDF]

open access: yes
The problem of predicting vortex breakdown, which is characterized by a drastic change in core size and trajectory, is still basically unsolved. In the present paper, viscous flow in a long rotating pipe is analyzed, as a model for the type of breakdown ...

Evolution of a Network of Vortex Loops in HeII. Exact Solution of the "Rate Equation"

open access: yes, 2005
Evolution of a network of vortex loops in HeII due to the fusion and breakdown of vortex loops is studied. We perform investigation on the base of the ''rate equation'' for the distribution function $n(l)$ of number of loops of length $l$ proposed by ...
