Vortex dynamics during blade-vortex interactions
Physics of Fluids, 2015Vortex dynamics during parallel blade-vortex interactions (BVIs) were investigated in a subsonic wind tunnel using particle image velocimetry (PIV). Vortices were generated by applying a rapid pitch-up motion to an airfoil through a pneumatic system, and the subsequent interactions with a downstream, unloaded target airfoil were studied.

Dynamics and Instabilities of Vortex Pairs
Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics, 2016This article reviews the characteristics and behavior of counter-rotating and corotating vortex pairs, which are seemingly simple flow configurations yet immensely rich in phenomena. Since the reviews in this journal by Widnall (1975) and Spalart (1998), who studied the fundamental structure and dynamics of vortices and airplane trailing vortices ...

Experimental Dynamics of a Vortex within a Vortex
Physical Review Letters, 2000We report the experimental dynamics of a new two-dimensional (2D) fluid phenomenon that occurs when an intense, pointlike vortex is placed within a diffuse, circular vortex. Our observations, made using strongly magnetized electron columns to model the 2D fluid, support the analysis performed by Jin and Dubin.

Interaction of a point vortex sink (twister) with an obstacle in a stationary and nonstationary flow is considered. Classification of twister trajectories, depending on nondimensional parameters of the system, and the probability of twister-obstacle collisions are presented.

The discovery of coherent structures in turbulence has fostered the hope that the study of vortices will lead to models and an understanding of turbulent flow, thereby solving or at least making less mysterious one of the great unsolved problems of classical physics.
