Vortex Shedding and Modal Behavior of a Circular Cylinder Equipped with Flexible Flaps [PDF]
When a cylinder is subject to a flow, vortices will be shed that can lead to strong tonal noise. The modification of the cylinder with soft, flexible flaps made of silicone rubber has been shown to affect the vortex shedding cycle in a way that the ...

Monomode Fibre Optic Vortex Shedding Flowmeter
The use of a monomode optical fibre sensing element in the measurement of flow velocities by an interferometric technique is described, in which the operating principle is the flow induced oscillation of the fibre caused by vortex shedding. The system has been demonstrated to show a linear response with water flows in the Reynolds number range 100–3500.

Hysteresis in quantized vortex shedding [PDF]
It is shown using numerical simulations that flow patterns around an obstacle potential moving in a superfluid exhibit hysteresis. In a certain velocity region, there is a bistability between stationary laminar flow and periodic vortex shedding. The bistability exists in two and three dimensional systems.

Investigation into the Strouhal numbers associated with vortex shedding from parallel-plate thermoacoustic stacks in oscillatory flow conditions [PDF]
This paper investigates vortex shedding processes occurring at the end of a stack of parallel plates, due to an oscillating flow induced by an acoustic standing wave.

Investigation of a drag reduction on a circular cylinder in rotary oscillation [PDF]
Drag reduction in two-dimensional flow over a circular cylinder, achieved using rotary oscillation, was investigated with computational simulations. In the experiments of Tokumaru & Dimotakis (1991), this mechanism was observed to yield up to 80% drag ...

Kármán vortex street in a two-component Bose–Einstein condensate
Vortex shedding from a moving obstacle potential in a two-component Bose–Einstein condensate is investigated numerically. For a miscible two-component condensate composed of ^23 Na and ^87 Rb atoms, in the wake of obstacle, the Kármán vortex street is ...

The onset of unsteadiness of two-dimensional bodies falling or rising freely in a viscous fluid: a linear study [PDF]
We consider the transition between the steady vertical path and the oscillatory path of two-dimensional bodies moving under the effect of buoyancy in a viscous fluid.

Trailing Edge Noise Reduction by Passive and Active Flow Controls [PDF]
This paper presents the results on the use of porous metal foams (passive control) and dielectric barrier surface plasma actuations (active control) for the reduction of vortex shedding tonal noises from the nonflat plate type trailing edge serration in ...
