Measurements of aircraft wake vortices in ground proximity within an atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The vortex wake characteristics of aircraft during landing and take-off are of interest in connection with both the safety of following aircraft penetrating the vortex and the dispersion of engine exhaust plumes. A series of measurements were carried out

Prediction, Understanding, and Mitigation of Aircraft Wake Vortices [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
As an unavoidable consequence of lift aircraft generate a pair of counter-rotating and long-lived wake vortices that may pose a potential risk to following aircraft.

Water in trees

open access: yesSubstantia, 2019
This essay shows that the relations between water and trees have far-reaching, unexpected aspects and consequences. The global and the local terrestrial water cycles are directly or indirectly linked to the presence of trees and forests.

Decoupling Light Absorption From Photocatalytic Reactivity in TiO2 via Defect and Interfacial Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A hybrid photoprotective material integrates N‐doped TiO2 with a metal‐phenolic network (MPN) to achieve broad‐spectrum attenuation and robust reactive oxygen species (ROS) suppression. Nitrogen doping extends attenuation into the UVA/high energy visible light (HEV) regions and facilitates fast charge recombination to inhibit ROS formation.

Helicopter tail rotor orthogonal blade vortex interaction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The aerodynamic operating environment of the helicopter is particularly complex and, to some extent, dominated by the vortices trailed from the main and tail rotors. These vortices not only determine the form of the induced flow field but also interact

From Photoalignment to Structured Light: Liquid Crystal Platforms for Beam Shaping and Complex Wavefronts

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Photoaligned and photopatterned liquid crystal platforms provide programmable control of optical phase, polarization, and spin‐orbit interactions, enabling compact generation of structured light and complex wavefronts. This review highlights how tailored molecular orientations transform simple beams into designed optical fields, opening versatile ...

On Chirality of the Vorticity of the Universe [PDF]

open access: yesEntropy, 2012
The presence of dark energy in the Universe challenges the Einstein’s theory of gravity at cosmic scales. It motivates the inclusion of rotational degrees of freedom in the Einstein–Cartan gravity, representing the minimal and the most natural extension of the General Relativity. One can, consequently, expect the violation of the cosmic isotropy by the

Effect of Optical Illumination on Bubble Nanodomains

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Stable surface‐confined nanoscale bubble domains are created and manipulated in PMN‐PT single crystals. Under above‐bandgap illumination, these bubble nanodomains remain unchanged. However, upon illumination cessation, they rapidly expand to switch the entire crystal surface, due to the accumulation of a large reservoir of electrons at the crystal ...

Experimental Setup for the Analysis of Vortices

open access: yesJournal of Applied Fluid Mechanics, 2015
This paper presents a specific experimental setup in which artificial vortices are successfully created and maintained under controlled conditions. The developed vortex simulation chamber is demonstrated to be crucial to the study of vortices and to ...
