Effects of Vowel Duration and Vowel Quality on Vowel-to-Vowel Coarticulation
This work investigates how vowel duration and vowel quality affect degrees of vowel-to-vowel coarticulation. The effects of these two factors on vowel-to-vowel coarticulation have previously received little study. Phonological durational differences due to vowel length distinction were examined in Thai.

Dialectology suffers from a lack of rigorously controlled techniques for recording vowel qualities. Instrumental investigation is often impracticable for the dialectologist An aural-imitative technique is here described, based on the cardinal vowel system.

Vowel quality alternation in Dinka verb derivation: The Agar variety [PDF]
In Dinka, a predominantly monosyllabic and highly fusional WesternNilotic language, vowel quality alternation in the root plays a major and systematicrole in the morphology of verbs, together with alternations in vowellength, voice quality, and tone ...

Mistuning a harmonic of a vowel: Grouping and phase effects on vowel quality
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1986The harmonic sieve has been proposed as a mechanism for excluding extraneous frequency components from the estimate of the pitch of a complex sound. The experiments reported here examine whether a harmonic sieve could also determine whether a particular harmonic contributes to the phonetic quality of a vowel.

Frequency warped modeling of vowel spectra: Dependence on vowel quality
Speech Communication, 2005The compact representation of harmonic amplitudes in the sinusoidal coding of speech is an important problem in low bit rate speech compression. A widely used method to achieve this is by the all-pole modeling of the spectral envelope. Often a perceptually warped frequency scale is applied in the all-pole modeling to improve perceived accuracy at low ...

The Acoustic Qualities of Bora Vowels
Phonetica, 2001Bora contains the vowel system /i e a o i w/, where /i/ is high, central, open, unrounded and /w/ is high, back, open, unrounded. A contrast between /i/ and /u/ is exceedingly rare in the languages of the world. An opposition between a central and a back vowel which are otherwise identical is theoretically significant since it shows that the binary ...

Vowel Length And Vowel Quality In Khasi
Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies, 1967One of the most striking phonetic characteristics of languages of the Austroasiatic family such as Mon, Khmer, and Vietnamese is the great variety of vowel qualities that appear to be kept apart by native speakers despite the fact that some of them differ from each other so slightly that it is hard for the foreign observer to believe that they can be ...

Modeling the judgment of vowel quality differences
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1981The hypothesis of this study is that the auditory cues relevant to listeners’ judgment of vowel quality are a spectral representation of loudness density versus pitch. A model is described that generates such patterns for steady-state vowels. In addition to the nonlinear transformations underlying the loudness density and pitch scales, it incorporates ...
