Dimension of Quality for the Vowel [æ]
Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1963Multidimensional analysis of similarity data was applied to the domain of a spoken vowel. Thirty-two male speakers provided samples of the vowel [æ]. Judgments of degree of similarity between each pair of vowels were obtained from 100 observers. The similarity judgments provided estimates of psychological distances between the vowels.

Auditory representation of vowel quality.
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2009It is generally assumed that the early stages of speech perception involve the extraction of some kind of generalized auditory patterns or properties from the peripheral input. The auditory representation that results is of considerable interest, since it serves as the input to higher-level, speech specific processes of phonetic perception. The current

Pitch of vowels: Experimental and theoretical investigation of its dependence on vowel quality
Speech Communication, 1984Abstract The auditory pitches of the vowels /a/, /e/, /fx1-137/, /i/, /o/, /u/, /ae/, /o/ and /y/ were measured in psychoacoustic experiments as a function of the vowels' spectral envelopes (vowel quality). The method of paired comparison (2AFC) was applied.

Quality and Quantity in Cree Vowels
Canadian Journal of Linguistics/Revue canadienne de linguistique, 1957The purpose of this paper is to describe in detail allophonic variation in Cree vowels so as to exhibit certain correlations between quality and quantity. The phonemically short vowels have considerable allophonic variation and this paper will be concerned to a large degree with their description.

Changes in Vowel Quality after Cochlear Implantation
ORL, 2003Since auditory feedback is partially restored after cochlear implantation, the aim of the present study was to investigate features of vowels, which reflect improvements in speech production. Ten postlingually deafened subjects (5 male/5 female) were recorded reading a German text before and 3 and 12 months after implantation, respectively.

Effects of Uvular Consonants on Vowel Quality in Lushootseed
Anthropological Linguistics, 2021Abstract: Instrumental phonetic study of Salish languages (Pacific Northwest) has primarily been conducted in the Interior branch of the family. Here, the acoustic properties of vowels in Lushootseed, a language of the Coast Salish branch, are examined, with particular attention to the effects of uvular consonants. Generally in line with what has been

The influence of spectral prominence on perceived vowel quality
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1990Research indicates that, when the first and second formants of a vowel are separated by less than about 3.5 Bark, perception of its height and some other aspects of its quality is determined by some weighted average of the low-frequency spectrum, rather than by particular harmonic or hypothetical formant frequencies (as is the case with more widely ...

Metrical Segmentation in Dutch: Vowel Quality or Stress?
Language and Speech, 1998Previous experiments using a word-spotting task suggest that English listeners use metrically strong syllables to segment continuous speech into discrete words (Cutler & Norris, 1988). The present study is concerned with this metrical segmentation strategy in Dutch.

The influence of vowel quality features on peak alignment
Interspeech 2007, 2007This study continues an approach that uses a unit selection corpus in order to investigate aspects of the phonetic realization of tonal categories. The focus lies on the peak position of German H*L pitch accents, specifically on the question of whether it is influenced by vowel quality. It is confirmed that vowel backness does not affect peak alignment

Spectrographic Determination of Vowel Quality
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1960Thirty-one sets of eight equivalent vowels were analyzed on a modified Kay Sona-Graph. The formant frequencies of vowels such as [e, ɛ, a]) usually could be determined unambiguously by visual inspection and measurement of the spectrographic displays.
