Abstract We examine the initial phases of explosion earthquakes accompanying Vulcanian eruptions at Lokon-Empung volcano in Indonesia to reveal the triggering process of explosive eruptions. In 2012–2013, 56 Vulcanian eruptions at Lokon-Empung were observed by our temporary observation network being comprised of four broadband seismometers and two ...

Abstract The dynamics of magma fragmentation is a controlling factor in the behavior of explosive volcanic eruptions. If porous magma is sufficiently decompressed, a fragmentation front develops and travels through the magma at a certain speed (fragmentation speed) while the resulting particles are being ejected.

Abstract We compare the texture of volcanic ash with the maximum amplitude of explosion earthquakes ( A eq ) for vulcanian eruptions from Sakurajima volcano. We analyze the volcanic ash emitted by 17 vulcanian eruptions from 1974 to 1987. Using a stereoscopic microscope, we classify the glassy particles into smooth surface particles (S-type ...

Source mechanisms of vulcanian eruptions at Mt. Asama, Japan, inferred from volcano seismic signals
Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 2008Abstract During the 2004 Asama volcanic activity, five summit eruptions, accompanied by the broadband seismic signals, were observed. We re-analyse the broadband waveform data analysed by Ohminato et al. (2006) using relaxed restrictions.

Coeval strombolian and vulcanian type explosive eruptions at Panarea (Aeolian islands)
2008In this paper, we document the evolution of the emergent Panarea dome in the Aeolian islands 14 (Southern Italy), placing particular emphasis on the reconstruction of the explosive events occurred 15 during the final stage of its evolution. Two main pyroclastic successions exposing fall deposits with 16 different compositions have been studied into ...
