The perfect threat: Pesticides and vultures.

open access: yesScience of the Total Environment, 2019
Probably the most important threat currently affecting vultures worldwide is exposure to pesticides, both accidentally and through deliberate abuse.

Balancing Exploration and Exploitation Through a Sequential Hybrid of Roach Infestation and Mayfly Algorithms for Constrained Engineering Design Optimization

open access: yesAI &Innovation, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Maintaining an effective balance between exploration and exploitation is essential during optimization processes, from mathematical functions to more complex problems such as constrained engineering design optimization, particularly when addressing highly nonlinear issues with numerous local optima and strict feasibility requirements.

Preference of trees for nest building by critically endangered white‐rumped vultures (Gyps bengalensis) in Nepal

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
White‐rumped vultures (Gyps bengalensis) are critically endangered species, and protecting their habitats, particularly the nesting trees, may have a positive impact on their reproductive success.

Potential threat to Eurasian griffon vultures in Spain from veterinary use of the drug diclofenac [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
1. Spain holds > 95% of the European breeding population of the Eurasian griffon vulture Gyps fulvus. Vultures provide important ecosystem services in carcass removal and influence emissions of greenhouse gases.

Modified Titanium Dental Implants: The Current Progress of Soft‐Tissue Integration Methods

open access: yesAdvanced NanoBiomed Research, EarlyView.
Dental implants are an established solution for tooth loss, yet achieving soft tissue integration (STI) around the transmucosal region remains a challenge. The natural tooth–gingiva interface is poorly replicated on titanium implants. This review explores surface modification strategies, ranging from surface chemistry and topography to biological ...

Evolutionary, Functional and Mechanistic Characterisation of Microbial Terpene Synthase‐Like Genes From Springtails

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
A genome analysis revealed the presence of many bacterial‐type terpene synthases in springtails. Four enzymes from Sinella curviseta were functionally characterised, resulting in the isolation of several compounds including sinellene ether, the first diterpene ether identified from a terpene synthase that represents a novel skeleton.

Diffusion‐Governed Growth Mechanisms of Epitaxial GaAs Islands on CMOS‐Compatible Si(001) Nanotip Arrays

open access: yesAdvanced Physics Research, EarlyView.
The mechanism and kinetics of selective GaAs growth on Si nanotip wafers via nanoheteroepitaxy were investigated as a function of pitch (center‐to‐center nanotip spacing). The pitch dependence reveals distinct surface‐diffusion‐controlled regimes, demonstrating that lateral Ga adatom transport on the SiO2 mask governs material redistribution and ...

Lagomorph cranial biomechanics and the functional significance of the unique fenestrated rostrum of leporids

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The crania of leporid lagomorphs are uniquely fenestrated, including the posterior cranial bones and the lateral portion of the maxilla. The functional significance of the highly fenestrated rostrum has received considerably little attention, despite being absent in other mammalian herbivores with a long rostrum.

Revisiting paravertebral muscles in European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and European brown hares (Lepus europaeus) (Leporidae; Lagomorpha)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Domesticated European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) have long been chosen as laboratory model organisms. Despite this, there has been no definitive study of the vertebral musculature of wild rabbits. Relevant descriptions of well‐studied veterinary model mammals (such as dogs) are generally applicable, but not appropriate for a species ...

Abundance, distribution, and conservation status of critically endangered vultures in N’Djamena and environs, Chad, Central Africa

open access: yesFrontiers in Bird Science
Vultures provide essential environmental services by eliminating animal carcass remains and preventing the spread of diseases, but unfortunately, many African vulture species have exhibited significant population declines and are now in imminent danger ...
