Analysis of Gene Expression in Aedes aegypti Suggests Changes in Early Genetic Control of Mosquito Development

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part B: Molecular and Developmental Evolution, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aedes aegypti, a critical vector for tropical diseases, poses significant challenges for studying its embryogenesis due to difficulties in removing its rigid chorion and achieving effective fixation for in situ hybridization. Here, we present novel methodologies for fixation, dechorionation, DAPI staining, and in situ hybridization, enabling ...

The emerging roles of arthropods and their metabolites in the green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles

open access: yesNanotechnology Reviews, 2016
Nanotechnology has remained relevant as a multifacet discipline, which cuts across different areas of science and technology. Several successful attempts had been documented regarding the involvement of biological materials in the green synthesis of ...

Detection and Replication of Moku Virus in Honey Bees and Social Wasps

open access: yesViruses, 2020
Transmission of honey bee viruses to other insects, and vice versa, has previously been reported and the true ecological importance of this phenomenon is still being realized.

Advancing Therapies for Mycobacterial Diseases: From Small Molecules to Host‐Directed Strategies

open access: yesMedicinal Research Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The global burden of multidrug‐resistant tuberculosis (MDR‐TB) and the rising incidence of nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections highlight the urgent need for innovative therapeutic strategies. Current treatments are prolonged, toxic, and increasingly compromised by resistance and limited diagnostic capacity.

Enhanced Trapping of Yellowjacket Wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) via Spatial Partitioning of Attractants

open access: yesInsects, 2017
Several yellowjacket species are important pests in both their native habitat and in areas where they are invasive. Traps that contain one or more chemical attractants to lure insects inside are commonly used to combat these yellowjackets in urban ...

Rainforest conversion to monoculture plantations restructures functional communities of braconid parasitoid wasps

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
The conversion of rainforests into rubber and oil palm plantations drives biodiversity loss in Southeast Asia. Parasitoid wasps are highly diverse and play an essential role in ecosystems by regulating herbivore populations. Declines in density and diversity of parasitoid wasps, after land‐use change is well‐documented, but potential functional losses ...

A plant–pollinator invasional meltdown: the Japanese pagoda tree Styphnolobium japonicum facilitates the invasion of the giant resin bee Megachile sculpturalis

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
An invasional meltdown can occur when a non‐native species facilitates the spread of another non‐native species in the invaded area, increasing its likelihood of survival or its ecological impact. Plant–pollinator systems pose an exceptional study system to test this concept, which remains poorly known.

The shared benefits of fallen fruits: A novel mechanism stabilizing a nursery pollination mutualism between Sambucus and kateretid beetles

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Understanding how cooperative interactions remain stable matters for biodiversity because many plants rely on specialist insects that can also impose reproductive costs. We studied the interaction between Sambucus sieboldiana and seed‐consuming Heterhelus beetles through detailed field observations and pollination experiments.

SYN‐A, a naturally derived synergist, restores pyrethroid efficacy against cabbage stem flea beetle but negatively impacts its parasitoid Microctonus brassicae

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
SYN‐A, a naturally derived synergist, inhibited key metabolic pathways associated with pyrethroid insecticide resistance in cabbage stem flea beetle (CSFB) and its parasitoid Microctonus brassicae. SYN‐A restored pyrethroid efficacy against resistant CSFB allowing up to 80% reduction in application rates.
