Laser‐Induced Graphene from Waste Almond Shells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Almond shells, an abundant agricultural by‐product, are repurposed to create a fully bioderived almond shell/chitosan composite (ASC) degradable in soil. ASC is converted into laser‐induced graphene (LIG) by laser scribing and proposed as a substrate for transient electronics.

Postnatal enteral plasma supplementation following birth asphyxia increases fluid retention and kidney health in newborn pigs

open access: yesPhysiological Reports
Birth asphyxia can result in kidney dysfunction, disturbances in systemic electrolytes and fluid balance in newborns. Currently, there is no proven dietary approach to support asphyxiated newborns.

Determination of insensible water loss and sodium accumulation behavior from the Medtronic Nautilus Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) oxygenator: An in vitro study

open access: yesThe Journal of ExtraCorporeal Technology
Introduction: Fluid and electrolyte balance is closely managed in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) patients. Neglecting oxygenator-related insensible fluid losses can distort fluid balance and electrolyte levels.

From Escherichia coli heat-stable enterotoxin to mammalian endogenous guanylin hormones

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 2014
The isolation of heat-stable enterotoxin (STa) from Escherichia coli and cholera toxin from Vibrio cholerae has increased our knowledge of specific mechanisms of action that could be used as pharmacological tools to understand the guanylyl cyclase-C and ...

Developing a Water Balance Model to Estimate Consumptive Use in the Southeast Watershed Planning Region of Oklahoma [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
With the passage of the Water for 2060 Act, Oklahoma established a statewide goal of consuming no more freshwater in 2060 than was consumed in 2012. However, there currently does not exist a quantifiable method to estimate consumptive water use in the ...

Biomass Native Structure Into Functional Carbon‐Based Catalysts for Fenton‐Like Reactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study indicates that eight biomasses with 2D flaky and 1D acicular structures influence surface O types, morphology, defects, N doping, sp2 C, and Co nanoparticles loading in three series of carbon, N‐doped carbon, and cobalt/graphitic carbon. This work identifies how these structural factors impact catalytic pathways, enhancing selective electron

Assessment of Dry Cathode Configuration in Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis: A Mini Review

open access: yesElectrochemical Science Advances
Anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis is one of the most promising water electrolysis technologies, combining the advantages of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis, such as high gas purity, high current densities and dynamic operation, while

data_sheet_1_Using Electrolyte Free Water Balance to Rationalize and Treat Dysnatremias.PDF

open access: yes, 2018
Dysnatremias or abnormalities in plasma [Na+] are often termed disorders of water balance, an unclear physiologic concept often confused with changes in total fluid balance. However, most clinicians clearly recognize that hypertonic or hypotonic gains or

From Food to Power: Hydrogel Thermoelectrics for Ingestible Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We introduce a fully edible thermoelectric–electrochromic platform that harvests heat from food and converts it into a visible color change. N‐type and p‐type hydrogel thermoelectric generators connected in series power anthocyanin‐based electrochromic displays, demonstrating the feasibility of safe, biodegradable, ingestible systems for on‐food ...
