Aluminum and nitride coatings are used in industry because they are hard, resist wear, and protect against oxidation. Adding boron can improve friction behavior and other properties. This study tests coatings on surfaces with different finishes. Results show smoother surfaces perform better, while rough ones wear faster, although coatings can reduce ...

Fundamental Study of Water-Lubricated Ceramic Bearings.
The accurate values of low friction coefficient of ceramics (SiC, Si3N4, Al2O3) sliding against itself in water were measured. Stribeck curves of SiC, Si3N4 and Al2O3 in water were obtained. The observed lowest value of friction coefficient is 0.001 8 for Si3N4, 0.003 8 for SiC and 0.004 2 for Al2O3.
