Instability studies of an 'O'-ring flexibly supported, gas bearing, mounted, cool air unit. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
A Cool Air unit (C. A. U. ) is powered by air bled from the engine and supplies cool air to the avionics and cockpit of the aircraft. Essentially a small turbo machine, the rotor is mounted upon two plain (gas) air bearings, which are flexibly ...

Elephant‐Skin‐Inspired Porous Cementitious Tiles with Programmable Crack Networks for Passive Cooling

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Elephant‐skin‐inspired crack networks are programmed in porous diatomaceous earth (DE)‐cement composites using substrate‐guided, stress‐concentration induced fracture. The resulting crack lattices act as capillary conduits that redistribute water, while the porous matrix stores moisture.

A Comparative Study of Theoretical and Experimental Analysis on Balanced and Unbalanced Rotors Supported by Oil- and Water-Lubricated Journal Bearings

open access: yesMachines
Studying rotor-bearing systems involving fluid film bearings is essential for designing and assessing the dynamic responses and performance of rotating machinery. They are involved in many applications such as pumps, turbines, and engines.

Bearing defect diagnosis and acoustic emission. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Acoustic emission (AE) was originally developed for non-destructive testing of static structures, however, over the years its application has been extended to health monitoring of rotating machines and bearings.

Leaf‐Inspired Eutectic Skin With Extreme Fatigue Resistance and Robust Wet Adhesion for Amphibious Epidermal Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by Acorus calamus leaves, a heterogeneous eutectic skin integrates an aligned fibrous network within a hydrophobic eutectogel matrix. This hierarchical architecture triggers strain‐induced crystallization to achieve exceptional mechanical toughness and durable wet adhesion.

Dynamic Coefficients Identification of Water-Lubricated Hybrid Bearings Used in High-Speed Spindles with Different Excitation Methods

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2017
Rotor stability and rotation accuracy, which are highly dependent on the dynamic coefficients of supporting hybrid bearings, are two important issues of high-speed water-lubricated spindles.

Experimental Investigation of Prototype Water-Lubricated Compliant Foil Bearings

open access: yes, 2011
First gas-lubricated compliant foil bearings (CFBs) were built in the 1950s. Due to their significant advantages, such as oil-free operation, good tolerance to bearing misalignment and very low maintenance, they have been penetrating the bearing ...

On the Friction and Wear Mechanisms of Electrified Steel Contacts in CO2: Unveiling the Role of Carbon‐Rich Tribofilms Under Dry Sliding Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
This study investigates friction and wear of AISI 52100 steel under dry sliding in CO2, air, and N2 atmospheres, with and without contact electrification. CO2 forms a stable carbon‐rich tribofilm that reduces friction by ∼30% and wear by ∼85%. High‐resolution TEM, EELS, and molecular dynamics reveal pressure‐dependent lubrication mechanisms, showing ...

An eco-impact design metric for water lubricated bearings based on anticipatory Life Cycle Assessment

open access: yes, 2021
Water lubricated bearings have been named in literature as a sustainable alternative to their oil-based counterparts. In order to clarify when water lubricated bearings are or are not a sustainable alternative, and inform design decisions, an analytical ...
