Making tau amyloid models in vitro: a crucial and underestimated challenge

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review highlights the challenges of producing in vitro amyloid assemblies of the tau protein. We review how accurately the existing protocols mimic tau deposits found in the brain of patients affected with tauopathies. We discuss the important properties that should be considered when forming amyloids and the benchmarks that should be used to ...

Love Wave Ultraviolet Photodetector Fabricated on a TiO2/ST-Cut Quartz Structure

open access: yesInternational Journal of Photoenergy, 2014
A TiO2 thin film deposited on a 90° rotated 42°45′ ST-cut quartz substrate was applied to fabricate a Love wave ultraviolet photodetector. TiO2 thin films were grown by radio frequency magnetron sputtering.

Achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 06 in Brazil: the universal access to sanitation as a possible mission

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, 2018
Sanitation (which includes national public policies for drinking water, sewage services and waste management) is precarious in Brazil and therefore poses a challenge to a range of actors. Poor sanitation impacts public health, education, the environment,

Standard methods for the examination of water and waste water.

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Public Health and the Nations Health, 1966
1. Discussion Alkalinity of a water is its acid-neutralizing capacity. It is the sum of all the titratable bases. The measured value may vary significantly with the end-point pH used.

Social context prevents heat hormetic effects against mutagens during fish development

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows that sublethal heat stress protects fish embryos against ultraviolet radiation, a concept known as ‘hormesis’. However, chemical stress transmission between fish embryos negates this protective effect. By providing evidence for the mechanistic molecular basis of heat stress hormesis and interindividual stress communication, this study ...

I will follow him through woody mountains and water: Semantic-pragmatic analysis of a formula within the context of consensual abduction [PDF]

open access: yesGlasnik Etnografskog Instituta SANU, 2014
The starting points for this paper are Vuk’s testimony about the bride kidnapping in the Serbia of his time and the formulaic parts of speech pronounced during the trials, which Vuk mentions. Through a semantic-pragmatic analysis of the formulae

Modifications in FLAP's second cytosolic loop influence 5‐LOX interaction, inhibitor binding, and leukotriene formation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The enzyme 5‐lipoxygenase (5‐LOX) catalyzes the first step in the biosynthesis of leukotrienes (LTs) involved in inflammatory pathophysiology. After cellular stimulation, 5‐LOX translocates to the nucleus, interacting with the 5‐LOX‐activating protein (FLAP) to form LTA4 from arachidonic acid (AA).

Human-elephant coexistence through aligning conservation with societal aspirations

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2022
Nature’s contributions to people diminish when people are alienated from nature. We developed a framework to help support more sustainable people-nature interactions in the context of the conservation of African elephants (Loxodonta africana and L ...
