Rhizodeposition Drives One Third of Belowground Carbon Input in Agroecosystems

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study quantifies photosynthesized C allocation in the plant–soil system across six crop types: barley, wheat, maize, rice, legumes and grasses. It reports C partitioning into shoot respiration, shoot‐C, root‐C, net rhizodeposition and root‐derived CO2, providing standardized percentage averages and GPP‐derived absolute values as a robust baseline ...

Documentation of a recharge-discharge water budget and main-streambed recharge volumes, and fundamental evaluation of groundwater tracer studies for the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer

open access: yesTexas Water Journal, 2014
Data and information reveal that the Edwards Aquifer between Lady Bird Lake (the Colorado River) in Austin, Texas and the "groundwater divide" near Kyle, Texas discharges to 2 major springs: Barton Springs and Cold and Deep Eddy Springs.

Accelerated Discovery of Earth‐Abundant Oxygen Evolution Catalysts Through Surface‐Informed Active Learning

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A surface‐informed active learning framework integrated with density functional theory enables resource efficient screening of the NiCoFe ternary composition space. Experimental validation identifies Ni55Co10Fe35 as the optimal composition, exhibiting favorable oxygen evolution reaction kinetics.

A GRACE/‐FO‐Based Framework for Improved Reproduction of Water‐Balance‐Constrained Evapotranspiration Across Hydroclimatic Regimes

open access: yesEarth and Space Science
Diagnosing monthly evapotranspiration (ET) under water‐balance constraints is essential for understanding land‐atmosphere interactions and managing water resources under changing climate conditions. Since 2002, the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment

Habitat‐Specific Design Strategies for Untethered Soft Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Habitat shapes the design of untethered soft robots. Across land, water, air, and living tissues, environmental constraints govern viable combinations of compliant structures, actuation mechanisms, and energy delivery. This review connects these constraints with robotic performance and identifies design principles for advancing adaptable, durable, and ...

Hydrometeorological Trends in a Low-Gradient Forested Watershed on the Southeastern Atlantic Coastal Plain in the USA

open access: yesHydrology
Hydrology and meteorological data from relatively undisturbed watersheds aid in identifying effects on ecosystem services, tracking hydroclimatic trends, and reducing model uncertainties.

Flooding‐Driven Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Global Upland Croplands

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Temporary flooding of upland croplands releases nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, and methane. Field measurements combined with a global literature synthesis yield a global estimate of 63.3 teragrams of carbon dioxide equivalent per year for diffusive emissions from flooded upland croplands.

Water exchange in the Baltic Sea: a historical view of research approaches from basin scales to submesoscale

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science
At the beginning of the 20th century, Knudsen illustrated that the mean observed salinity of the Baltic Sea could be realistically estimated, assuming an inflow of saline Kattegat water equals the net freshwater supply, also called the Knudsen theorem ...

Enhancing Surface Icephobic Performance via Spontaneous Fracture Characteristics of Ice Crystals Regulated by Structural Scale Under Shear Flow Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Aerodynamic shear induces spontaneous ice fracture and detachment on hydrophobic surfaces, governed by the interplay between initial ice‐crystal size, growth orientation, and interfacial adhesion. Unexpectedly, microstructural anchoring on superhydrophobic surfaces suppresses ice shedding.
