Flashover along a Water Column
IEEE Transactions on Electrical Insulation, 1976The flashover voltage and current of a water column, which provides a suitable resistive surface for discharge propagation, have been calculated considering the heating and constriction of the column. Theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results obtained under dc applied voltage for: jet lengths of 2 ? L ?

Stability of Water Cooled Columns
Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division, 1971It is shown analytically that the buckling strength of tubular columns can be significantly reduced by partial yielding caused by temperature gradients across the wall of the column. The buckling is of the Shanley type. For columns subjected to constant load, the temperature difference between the outside and inside of the column takes the place of the

Wave patterns on a water column
American Journal of Physics, 1997An elementary analysis is given for some familiar wave patterns observed along a vertical water jet. The results follow from the fact that the group velocity of the short axially symmetric capillary waves is greater than the phase velocity, while the converse is true for the long waves having an azimuthal dependence.

Abstract An expression is derived for the surface salt input needed to induce complete convective overturning of a polar water column consisting of 1) a layer of sea ice, 2) a freezing temperature mixed layer, 3) a pycnocline with linearly varying temperature and salinity, and 4) deep water with fixed temperature and salinity.

Life in the estuarine water column
2000Abstract In many ways, physical conditions in the estuarine water column are more rigorous than in the benthos. For example, there is no buffering by the sediment against sudden changes in salinity. But in fact the plankton does not often have to face the problem of great changes in salinity because the organisms travel with bodies of
