Origin of water masers in W49N

1993
It is proposed that H2O masers in star-forming regions occur early in the expansion of thin shells swept up by high-velocity winds from young massive stars. In W49N, confinement of the shell by a density distribution with an axial cavity can explain both the velocity field and the shape of the mass distribution.

Water Maser and Envelope of Infrared Stars

Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan, 1977
Abstract The populations of levels including the ν2 vibrationally excited state for water molecules in the circumstellar envelope of maser/infrared sources are calculated. The maser power obtained for the 616–523 transition of water is of the order of 1043 photons s–1, which is consistent with observations.
