Principles and Practices of Plant-based Irrigation Management

open access: yesHortTechnology, 2021
Many consider tools for plant-based irrigation management methods to be the most precise way to manage irrigation in either a research or a commercial settings.

Mechanisms of parasite‐mediated disruption of brain vessels

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Parasites can affect the blood vessels of the brain, often causing serious neurological problems. This review explains how different parasites interact with and disrupt these vessels, what this means for brain health, and why these processes matter. Understanding these mechanisms may help us develop better ways to prevent or treat brain infections in ...

Indirect evidence for genetic differentiation in vulnerability to embolism in Pinus halepensis

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2016
Climate change is increasing mean temperatures and in the eastern Mediterranean is expected to decrease annual precipitation. The resulting increase in aridity may be too rapid for adaptation of tree species unless their gene pool already possesses ...

Absence of Yield Reduction after Controlled Water Stress during Prehaverst Period in Table OliveTrees

open access: yesAgronomy, 2020
Deficit irrigation scheduling is becoming increasingly important under commercial conditions. Water status measurement is a useful tool in these conditions. However, the information about water stress levels for olive trees is scarce.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Potential for water distillation by using solar energy in Malawi [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The potential for solar water distillation in Malawi has been modelled. Mean monthly global solar radiation (H) data from 19 sites spread all over the country was used to compute the mean monthly daily distillate productivity (M).

Valuing improvements in the water rights system in South Africa : a contingent ranking approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In the context of increasing water scarcity, understanding is growing that irrigation water rights are important and that a lack of effective water rights systems constitute a major reason for inefficient water management.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

An overview of vine water status assessment [PDF]

open access: yesCiência e Técnica Vitivinícola
In regions influenced by the Mediterranean climate, the distribution of rainfall is uneven throughout the year, with rainfall concentrated in winter and hot, dry summers, which is being boosted by climate change towards a worsening of this situation. Due
