Renin responses to water restriction and rehydration

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, 1972
1. The effect of restricted water intake and rapid rehydration was studied in three conscious sheep with respect to plasma renin concentration (PRC), blood corticosteroid levels, plasma protein and electrolyte concentrations, and the renal and faecal excretion of sodium and potassium.2.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Choked flow in water/CO2 solutions on air-independent propulsion systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We develop a simplified model of choked flow in pipes for CO2-water solutions as an important step in the modelling of a whole hydraulic system with the intention of eliminating the carbon dioxide generated in air-independent submarine propulsion.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Gaming with eutrophication: Contribution to integrating water quantity and quality management at catchment level [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The Metropolitan Region of Sao Paulo (MRSP) hosts 18 million inhabitants. A complex system of 23 interconnected reservoirs was built to ensure its water supply.

Impact of Deficit Irrigation Strategies Using Saline Water on Soil and Peach Tree Yield in an Arid Region of Tunisia

open access: yesAgriculture
Sustainable fruit orchard development in arid areas is severely affected by the scarcity of fresh water. To mitigate the lack of fresh water, the use of low-quality water for irrigation is becoming a common practice in several margin areas.

Aboveground Structural Attributes and Morpho-Anatomical Response Strategies of Bromus valdivianus Phil. and Lolium perenne L. to Severe Soil Water Restriction

open access: yesAgronomy, 2023
Grass species have a range of strategies to tolerate soil water restriction, which are linked to the environmental conditions at their site of origin.

Humoral control of water and electrolyte excretion during water restriction

open access: yesKidney International, 1986
The goals of the present study were twofold: first, to assess the renal excretory and hormonal responses to chronic water restriction in dogs whose sodium retaining mechanisms had been stimulated through dietary sodium (Na+) deprivation; second, to determine the mediator(s) of the natriuresis which was observed with water restriction in these sodium ...

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Physiological and behavioral basis for the successful adaptation of goats to severe water restriction under hot environmental conditions

open access: yesAnimal, 2016
Among domestic ruminants, goats are renowned for their ability to tolerate water deprivation, water restriction and energy restriction. However, some basic questions regarding their ability to endure water restriction under heat stress are still open ...
