Establishing the Relationship between Occupants’ Thermal Behavior and Energy Consumption during Showering

open access: yesBuildings, 2023
Despite an increased awareness about energy conservation in the past decade, the energy consumed for water heating has increased by 7% from 2008 (17%) to 2018 (24%) in Hong Kong. A literature review on existing energy-saving technologies during showering

Effects of temperature and nutrients on phytoplankton biomass during bloom seasons in Taihu Lake

open access: yesWater Science and Engineering, 2012
Long-term variations of phytoplankton chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), nutrients, and suspended solids (SS) in Taihu Lake, a large shallow freshwater lake in China, during algal bloom seasons from May to August were analyzed using the monthly investigated data ...

Analysis of granger causality between daily and monthly temperatures of water and air, as illustrated with the example of Noteć river [PDF]

open access: yesActa Scientiarum Polonorum. Formatio Circumiectus, 2018
The study presents the results obtained following the analysis of the so-called Granger causality between daily and monthly temperatures of air and water for the period 1987–2013 carried out for the Noteć river and its two main tributaries: Drawa and ...

Water Temperature Protocol [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The purpose of this resource is to measure the temperature of a water sample. Students use an alcohol-filled thermometer or meter to measure the temperature of water.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Numerical prediction of cavitation phenomena on marine vessel: Effect of the water environment profile on the propulsion performance

open access: yesOpen Engineering, 2022
Energy-saving and emission reduction are crucial since shipping activity due to the global maritime trade has increased exponentially. Several agreements have been engaged to optimize ship energy efficiency composed of ship design and shipping operation ...

Film extrusion of sunflower protein isolate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Film extrusion of sunflower protein isolate (SFPI) was studied. The influence of die temperature (85 to 160°C), water and glycerol contents were investigated through appearance, mechanical and thermo-mechanical properties and swelling behavior in water ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

The water supercooled regime as described by four common water models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The temperature scale of simple water models in general does not coincide with the natural one. Therefore, in order to make a meaningful evaluation of different water models a temperature rescaling is necessary.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...
