Regional coyote densities estimated from camera trapping covary with deer productivity, anthropogenic land use, and human–coyote conflicts

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Density estimates assist conservation and management decisions. Unfortunately, management of elusive mesocarnivores occurring at low densities has often relied on qualitative metrics or population indices. The proliferation of camera trap sampling of wildlife provides an opportunity to apply recently developed methods for estimating density of unmarked

HOME RANGE AND MICROHABITAT ASSOCIATIONS OF THE SOUTHERN RED-BACKED VOLE (MYODES GAPPERI) IN NEW HAMPSHIRE FORESTS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Resources, such as food and shelter, are unevenly distributed across the landscape at both macro and micro scales. Home range is one measure of space use that reflects an individual’s resource requirements (e.g., microhabitat characteristics) and ...

Mammal endemism In Italy: A review [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Although there are various checklists of Italian mammals, there is not yet a synthesis of those mammals that are endemic to Italy. Therefore, we provide for the first time a detailed review on Italian mammal endemic species including endemic taxa ...

Finding Mr. Right: Housing Quality Affects Male Mouse Attractiveness to Females, With Implications for Conservation Captive Breeding

open access: yesZoo Biology, EarlyView.
Housing quality affects male mouse attractiveness to females ABSTRACT Females generally prefer mates with traits indicating low stress (e.g., large size; good health). In captivity, stress from suboptimal housing might therefore reduce male attractiveness.

Captive housing during water vole (Arvicola terrestris) reintroduction: does short-term social stress impact on animal welfare? [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2010
BACKGROUND: Animals captive bred for reintroduction are often housed under conditions which are not representative of their preferred social structure for at least part of the reintroduction process.

Efficacy of a number of toxic baits and baiting against the voles, Microtus agrestis and Arvicola terrestris [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
The results from two series of control experiments against the voles, Microtus agrestis and Arvicola terrestris, are reported. In a series of field experiments in the 1970s, three acute toxicants (zinc phosphide, crimidine, and difluorpropanol) were ...

Maternal glucocorticoids have persistent effects on offspring social phenotype irrespective of opportunity for social buffering

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
This study tests whether early‐life maternal association buffers offspring from the effects of prenatal stress in a facultatively social lizard. Despite clear effects of maternal glucocorticoids on growth and social behaviour, social associations did not mitigate these effects, revealing limits to social buffering in this species.

Individual and population energy budgets of the water vole [PDF]

open access: yesActa Theriologica, 1976

Inference of Selection Based on Temporal Genetic Differentiation in the Study of Highly Polymorphic Multigene Families [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The co-evolutionary arms race between host immune genes and parasite virulence genes is known as Red Queen dynamics. Temporal fluctuations in allele frequencies, or the ‘turnover’ of alleles at immune genes, are concordant with predictions of the Red ...
