We provide a framework for extending commonly used integrated population models to a metapopulation framework for testing novel ecological hypotheses about how changing environmental conditions within and among subpopulations drive changes in animal abundance.

Large mammal recovery in the wake of human population decline
Human depopulation, particularly in rural areas, has contributed to the recovery of some large mammal populations. While recovery is generally good news for conservation, it can also lead to human‐wildlife conflict. We present several avenues to maximize coexistence in the face of further rural depopulation in other places. Read the free Plain Language

Integrating ecological feedbacks across scales and levels of organization
In ecosystems, species interact in various ways with other species, and with their local environment. In addition, ecosystems are coupled in space by diverse types of flows. From these links connecting different ecological entities can emerge circular pathways of indirect effects: feedback loops.

Psittaciformes exhibit high levels of morphological diversity, particularly in skull and beak structure, previously linked to diet and body size. Although there were some levels of significance between diet and beak shape, body mass was a much stronger co‐variate. Diet is not determining beak shape within the clade.

ABSTRACT Natural capital accounting provides a framework for integrating ecological processes with economic valuation, but the mechanics of shadow price formation often remain opaque to resource managers and policymakers. Using the Clarks Fork elk herd in northwestern Wyoming as a case study, we decompose the shadow price of natural capital into its ...

Hydrologic wetland restoration in the Prairie Pothole Region is a common management practice to facilitate habitat and ecosystem recovery after degradation or drainage. Little is known about the recovery of sediment microbial communities relative to other organisms, such as vegetation, fish, and macroinvertebrates, even though they are critical for ...
