SUMMARY Serious outbreaks of type C botulism in waterfowl have recently been reported in the Netherlands, Spain and Britain. Recent surveys of Clostridium botulinum in the mud of British lakes and waterways have revealed a prevalence that was surprisingly high – much higher than that found in surveys of soil made between 1922 and 1942.
