Wave Attenuation in Ice

Offshore Technology Conference, 1987
ABSTRACT A theoretical model is presented for the calculation or the attenuation of ocean waves as they pass through partial ice cover. Open water waves, described by a wave spectrum, are assumed to encounter a region of partial ice cover.

Attenuation and distortion of waves

Electrical Engineering, 1933
The conventional theory explaining the attenuation and distortion of traveling waves is not adequate to explain many peculiarities found to exist in such waves, In this paper there is developed a multi-conductor multi-velocity theory of traveling waves which more completely explains wave behavior. The conventional traveling wave theory is shown to be a

Wave attenuation

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1982
It is commonly observed that propagating waves lose amplitude sooner than might be expected for elastic media with smoothly varying properties. The explanation is in part that real materials are not elastic, and in part that real materials are not smoothly varying but have fine scale spatial fluctuations.

Wave Attenuation by Vegetation

Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering, 1993
The vertically two-dimensional problem of small-amplitude waves propagating over submerged vegetation is formulated using the continuity and linearized momentum equations for the regions above and within the vegetation. The effects of the vegetation on the flow field are assumed to be expressible in terms of the drag force acting on the vegetation.

Attenuation of Waves in Plasmas

Radio Science, 1972
Among the variety of problems arising from attenuating influences on the propagation of waves, three will be reviewed: (a) determination of the correct gas‐kinetic description of collisions between the plasma particles and their relation to the conductivity tensor and the dispersion equation, (b) the generalization of the basic laws of geometric optics

Wave Attenuation in Elastic Continuum with Attenuating Neighborhood

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 1994
Spatial wave attenuation in elastic material is investigated in light of attenuating neighborhood theory of contiuum mechanics. The attenuating part of the constitutive equation is expressed by an integral function of strain over each point of the material.

Attenuation of sound waves

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1986
An active sound control system is described in which allowance is made in a relatively uncomplicated circuit for acoustic coupling between a sound generating system for generating a cancelling sound wave and a detector for sensing a sound wave to be cancelled.

The attenuation of Alfvén waves

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1954
When the collision frequency in an ionized gas is smaller than the wave frequency, it is not permissible to treat the gas as a continuous fluid. The equations for Alfven waves are obtained by working with distribution functions. The results illustrate the behavior of a gas when the collision frequency is low and may have applications in the ...

Surface Wave Attenuation

1980
Abstract : Amplitude spectra for the fundamental Rayleigh mode and for the combined higher Rayleigh modes are used to infer crustal models of shear wave internal friction for a region of the Middle East between southern Iran and western Turkey. This recently developed method requires only a single source and single receiver; thus, it is useful for ...

Gravity wave interaction with a wave attenuating system

Applied Ocean Research, 2020
Abstract In the present study, gravity wave interaction with a wave attenuating system (WAS) comprised of a series of surface piercing thin vertical porous plates fixed on a fully submerged rigid pontoon is analyzed. For the wave past porous barriers, a quadratic pressure drop is considered to account for the energy dissipation due to changes in wave
