Experimental realization of photonic topological insulator in a uniaxial metacrystal waveguide [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications, 2014
Photonic analogue of topological insulator was recently predicted by arranging ε/μ (permittivity/permeability)-matched bianisotropic metamaterials into two-dimensional superlattices.

Mechanisms of De‐icing by Surface Rayleigh and Plate Lamb Acoustic Waves

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Ice accretion impacts daily life, renewable energy generation, maintenance, and security in industries and aeronautics. Acoustic waves (AW) are a promising method for ice removal, although de‐icing mechanisms require further investigation to optimize energy efficiency.

Second-Harmonic Generation in Suspended AlGaAs Waveguides: A Comparative Study

open access: yesMicromachines, 2020
Due to adjustable modal birefringence, suspended AlGaAs optical waveguides with submicron transverse sections can support phase-matched frequency mixing in the whole material transparency range, even close to the material bandgap, by tuning the width-to ...

Exciton-polariton emission from organic semiconductor optical waveguides [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We photo-excite slab polymer waveguides doped with J-aggregating dye molecules and measure the leaky emission from strongly coupled waveguide exciton polariton modes at room temperature. We show that the momentum of the waveguide exciton polaritons can be controlled by modifying the thickness of the excitonic waveguide.

Nanoscale waveguiding methods [PDF]

open access: yesNanoscale Research Letters, 2007
While 32 nm lithography technology is on the horizon for integrated circuit (IC) fabrication, matching the pace for miniaturization with optics has been hampered by the diffraction limit. However, development of nanoscale components and guiding methods is burgeoning through advances in fabrication techniques and materials processing.

An Examination of Aerosol Jet‐Printed Surface Roughness and its Impact on the Performance of High‐Frequency Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study explores aerosol jet‐printed (AJP) surface roughness, its effects on the performance of microwave electronics, and its process contributors. First, an electromagnetic model is vetted for AJP's unique roughness signature. Simulations are built which show process‐induced roughness is as significant as conductor resistivity in driving microwave

Coupled nanopillar waveguides: optical properties and applications [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Stat. Sol. A 204 (11), 3647-3661 (2007), 2007
In this paper we review basic properties of coupled periodic and aperiodic nanopillar waveguides. A coupled nanopillar waveguide consists of several rows of periodically or aperiodically placed dielectric rods (pillars). In such a waveguide, light confinement is due to the total internal reflection, while guided modes dispersion is strongly affected by

Chiral Waveguides for Robust Waveguiding at the Deep Subwavelength Scale [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Applied, 2018
Guiding waves at scales shorter than the wavelength is crucial for many applications, including compact signal-processing systems and concentration of wave energy. High sensitivity to geometrical imperfections and disorder-induced backscattering, however, pose major problems. This study proposes using a chiral metamaterial, in which the waves guided at

Fabrication of low-loss SOI nano-waveguides including BEOL processes for nonlinear applications [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the European Optical Society-Rapid Publications, 2012
We report successful fabrication of low-loss SOI nano-waveguides with integrated PIN diode structures. The entire fabrication process is done on a 200 mm BiCMOS toolset using front-end-of-line (FEOL) and back-end-of-line (BEOL) processes and does not ...
