Characterization of Nitinol Produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion for Mechanical Metamaterial Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Stabilization of L‐PBF Ni50.7Ti49.3 under low‐cycle loading was investigated. Recoverable strain after cycling was dependent on the amount of applied load. Recovery ratio was 53.4% and 35.1% at intermediate and high load, respectively. The maximum total strain reached 10.3% at a high load of 1200 MPa.

Polarization-Insensitive Concentric Circular Grating Filters Featuring a Couple of Resonant Peaks

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2015
We demonstrate here guided mode resonance (GMR) concentric circular grating filters (CCGFs) on an HfO2-on-silicon platform. The fabricated devices are realized with a membrane structure by completely removing the silicon substrate beneath the HfO2 device

Optimized Superconducting Nanowire Single Photon Detectors to Maximize Absorptance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Dispersion characteristics of four types of superconducting nanowire single photon detectors, nano-cavity-array- (NCA-), nano-cavity-deflector-array- (NCDA-), nano-cavity-double-deflector-array- (NCDDA-) and nano-cavity-trench-array- (NCTA-) integrated ...

Influence of an Argon/Silane Atmosphere on the Temperature of a Thermal Plasma

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of a silane‐doped argon atmosphere on the chemical composition and temperature of a thermal nontransferring argon plasma is investigated using optical emission spectroscopy. As a result of the high amount of free electrons resulting from the stepwise ionization and dissociation of the silane molecule, even a silane addition of 0.01 vol ...

Silicon-Based Multimode Complex Bragg Gratings for Spectra-Tailored Filter

open access: yesPhotonics
Multimode waveguide Bragg gratings (MWBGs) provide significant advantages over traditional single-mode counterparts through their mode-coupling operations.

Efficient superfluorescent light sources with broad bandwidth

open access: yes, 1997
We demonstrate various efficient broad-band light sources at ~1µm wavelength with a 3dB bandwidth of up to 65nm at 108mW output power, based on rare-earth doped silica fibers and a simple adjustable spectral ...

Application of Raman and Photoluminescence Spectroscopy to MgO‐C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Visible to near infrared luminescence of MgO is studied on MgO‐C bricks and nominally pure MgO powder, with focus on two similar sharp high‐intensity signals, at 699 and 871 nm, each surrounded by symmetrical sidebands. The nature of these sidebands is investigated by temperature‐dependent spectroscopic measurements, confirming phonon involvement by ...

Effect of Laser Deoxidation on Adhesive‐Bonded Aluminum in an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser ablation of aluminum under oxygen‐free conditions. The goal is to produce oxide‐free substrates that enable improved adhesive bonding with epoxy. Optimized laser parameters (90% overlap, 300 µJ) combined with oxide‐free substrates result in the highest tensile strength of the adhesive bond.

Optical Synthesis of Terahertz and Millimeter-Wave Frequencies with Discrete Mode Diode Lasers

open access: yes, 2010
It is shown that optical synthesis of terahertz and millimeter-wave frequencies can be achieved using two-mode and mode-locked discrete mode diode lasers.
