Waxy Crude Oil Characterization and Experimental Study of the Restart of a Line Blocked with Gelled Waxy Crude

SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 2013
Abstract Subsea deepwater flowlines transporting crudes are subjected to shutdowns for operational or emergency reasons. For waxy crudes, the low temperature of the surrounding seawater may lead the oil to cool below its pour point. In this situation, a gelled structure composed of paraffin crystals distributed through a viscous matrix ...

Model to Predict the Viscosity of Waxy Crude oil

SPE Nigeria Annual International Conference and Exhibition, 2016
Abstract Waxy Crude Oils deposit wax at temperatures below the wax appearance temperature (WAT), thus exhibiting non-Newtonian flow behavior. In this study, the viscosity of waxy crude oils from 20 oil fields in the Niger Delta were measured for temperatures above and below the WAT using the Cannon-Fenske viscometer in line with D445 ...

Start-up of waxy crude oils in pipelines

Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics, 2019
Abstract The transport of waxy crude oils in aggressive environments, usually at low temperatures, is very common. Whenever a shutdown occurs and the oil rests at temperatures below the gelation point (GT), wax crystals appear, forming an interlocked structure, with a gel character.

Waxy Crude Oil Restart: Mechanical Properties of Gelled Oils

SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 1999
Abstract In case of a prolonged shutdown and an inopportune cooling, the crystallization of a crude oil takes place and hinders the production of these petroleum products. Because of the gel-like network formed by the crystals entrapping the oil, a restarting pressure is required to start-up flow.

Rheological Behavior and Structural Interpretation of Waxy Crude Oil Gels

Langmuir, 2005
A waxy crude oil which gels below a threshold temperature has been investigated under static and dynamic conditions, using a combination of rheological methods, optical microscopy, and DSC. Particular attention is given in this work to the influence of the mechanical history on gel strength and to describing the time-dependent rheological behavior. The

Influence of Thermal History on the Waxy Structure of Statically Cooled Waxy Crude Oil

SPE Journal, 2000
Summary The effect of the thermal history on the waxy structure of two statically cooled waxy crude oils is examined using a controlled stress rheometer for rheological measurements and a microscope to observe microstructure of wax crystals.

Application of the Casson model to thixotropic waxy crude oil

Rheologica Acta, 1999
The rheological behavior of a waxy crude oil was investigated using a coaxial cylinder viscometer. Experimental flow curves were fitted with the Casson equation. The Casson model was modified to interpret the hysteresis between upward and downward curves obtained in a series of consecutive runs.

Non-isothermal flows of waxy crude oils

2000
Summary: Waxy crude oils, at sufficiently low temperature, exhibit a non-Newtonian behaviour, since their rheological properties are strongly affected by the presence of paraffine crystals. In this paper, on the basis of available experimental results, we develop a model that describes their flows in the presence of a known thermal field.
