The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the operation principle of an OTDM-WDM transmission system. It provides a clear picture about all building blocks of the OTDM-WDM transmission system. It also contains descriptions of various techniques that can be used to generate ultra short optical pulses for OTDM system. The basic principles of multiplexing

Expanding Internet-based services are driving the need for evermore bandwidth in the network backbone. These needs will grow further as new real-time multimedia applications become more feasible and pervasive. Currently, there is no other technology on the horizon that can effectively meet such a demand for bandwidth in the transport infrastructure ...

BT's WDM trial - integrating WDM into an existing network
IEE Colloquium on Multiwavelength Optical Networks: Devices, Systems and Network Implementations. Day One, 1998BT is introducing WDM into its core network with two pilot schemes due to carry live traffic from 1998 summer. These are unique in that they employ 1+1 optical multiplex section protection and are capable of carrying both PDH and SDH traffic. In order to ensure that the WDM system does not degrade the performance of the traffic carried over it BT is ...

On IP-WDM integration: a retrospective
IEEE Communications Magazine, 2003Ghani et al. (2000) presented an in-depth look at the area of IP-optical integration. Specifically, that survey studied key architecture and protocols issues and outlined likely trends and developments. However, since then much has transpired, especially in light of the telecom market slowdown, and invariably these dynamics have significantly affected ...

OFC '98. Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibit. Technical Digest. Conference Edition. 1998 OSA Technical Digest Series Vol.2 (IEEE Cat. No.98CH36177), 1998
Summary form only given. Since the 1970s, and until very recently, wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) was the upgrade technology of last resort-a component level add-on used to extract a two- or three-fold gain in fiber capacity; business volumes were modest. Optical networks were rarely more than an esoteric theme at advanced technology concepts.

Integrated Network Management VI. Distributed Management for the Networked Millennium. Proceedings of the Sixth IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management. (Cat. No.99EX302), 2003
This paper presents a case study of the development of a WDM agent for the control of two prototype photonic network elements, an optical add/drop multiplexer and an optical cross-connect. Even though the hardware developed for these prototypes is too small for a commercial device, the software is fully featured, and with modifications, could support ...

Parametric gain in WDM systems
1999 IEEE LEOS Annual Meeting Conference Proceedings. LEOS'99. 12th Annual Meeting. IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society 1999 Annual Meeting (Cat. No.99CH37009), 2003In WDM systems, the impact of fiber nonlinearity can be detrimental: four wave mixing (FWM), cross phase modulation (XPM) and parametric gain (PG) are the main causes. Whereas FWM, XPM and single channel PG have been extensively studied, the PG impact on WDM systems was not yet investigated in detail.

Ultralow PDL WDM fiber couplers for WDM transmission systems
OFC '98. Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibit. Technical Digest. Conference Edition. 1998 OSA Technical Digest Series Vol.2 (IEEE Cat. No.98CH36177), 2002Summary form only given. We have presented the polarization-swapping method as a polarisation dependent loss (PDL) reducing technique for fused taper fiber couplers. The manufactured 1.48/1.55 /spl mu/m WDM fiber couplers have shown a small PDL of one tenth of that of conventional couplers.

Designing operational WDM networks
GLOBECOM '03. IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference (IEEE Cat. No.03CH37489), 2004Network design tools are routinely used in practice to design optical networks that can carry a given set of traffic demands at the least cost The criteria used to route demands during design are often different from those used while routing in the operational network.
