WDM-based packet networks

IEEE Communications Magazine, 1999
We discuss design considerations for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)-based packet networks. In the near term, such networks are likely to consist of WDM links connected using some form of electronic multiplexing. The focus of this article is on the joint design of the electronic and optical layer with the objective of simplifying the network and

On routing in large WDM networks

Optical Switching and Networking, 2006
An important problem in WDM network design is to construct a logical topology and determine an optimal routing over that topology. Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP) formulations to generate optimal solutions for this problem have been presented. Such formulations are computationally intractable, even for moderate sized networks.

OCDMA over WDM Transmission

2007 9th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks, 2007
The optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) over wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) passive optical network (PON) system has been proposed as a potential candidate for gigabit-symmetric fiber-to-the- home (FTTH) services. Asynchronous OCDMA over WDM systems have been experimentally demonstrated using superstructured fiber Bragg gratings ...

Dimensioning of survivable WDM networks

IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, 1998
In this paper routing, planning of working capacity, rerouting, and planning of spare capacity in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks are investigated. Integer linear programming (ILP) and simulated annealing (SA) are used as solution techniques. A complex cost model is presented.

Planning of WDM Ring Networks

Photonic Network Communications, 2000
The rapid introduction of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology to cope with the increased bandwidth requirements of transmission networks has intensified the need for recovery mechanisms at the optical layer. A first step towards survivable optical networking will be seen through the introduction of optical rings.

A WDM-based PCN architecture

IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, 2002
This paper proposes personal communication network (PCN) architecture based on wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). By employing the broadcast nature of the WDM star couplers, the proposed architecture furnishes a very simple and fast hand off procedure.

Dynamic MicroPhotonic WDM Equalizer

Second IEEE International Workshop on Electronic Design, Test and Applications, 2005
An efficient wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) channel equalizer employing a dynamic MicroPhotonic processor is demonstrated. Using a proof-of-principle 6-channel equalizer setup, optimum phase holograms have been generated, which realise WDM equalisation with more than 25 dB dynamic range and less than 0.2 dB power ripples.

SONET and WDM

2011
Synchronous Optical Networking (SONET) is a popular standard for fiber optic voice and data transmission. It was developed originally by Bellcore, the research and development arm of the local American phone companies in the late 1980s [60]. It was meant to be a standard for fiber optic connections between telephone switches.

Modelling of WDM terrestrial and submarine links for the design of WDM networks

2006 Optical Fiber Communication Conference and the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference, 2006
This paper is a powerpoint presentation of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network design by modelling WDM terrestrial and submarine links. It presents some examples where theoretical tools have been fruitful at 40 Gbit/s as well as for dispersion management at 10 Gbit/s.

Evolution of WDM in transport networks

OFC '98. Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibit. Technical Digest. Conference Edition. 1998 OSA Technical Digest Series Vol.2 (IEEE Cat. No.98CH36177), 2002
Summary form only given. The initial application of WDM technology in long distance transport networks has been a large success. It solved a severe capacity problem quickly, and at a cost much lower than possible with the alternatives available. This tutorial will examine WDM networking systems, both present and future, from the point of view of a ...
