Designing operational WDM networks

GLOBECOM '03. IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference (IEEE Cat. No.03CH37489), 2004
Network design tools are routinely used in practice to design optical networks that can carry a given set of traffic demands at the least cost The criteria used to route demands during design are often different from those used while routing in the operational network.

On routing in large WDM networks

Optical Switching and Networking, 2006
An important problem in WDM network design is to construct a logical topology and determine an optimal routing over that topology. Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP) formulations to generate optimal solutions for this problem have been presented. Such formulations are computationally intractable, even for moderate sized networks.

Preconfigured structures for survivable WDM networks

Proceedings of the 2008 International Conference on Advanced Infocomm Technology - ICAIT '08, 2008
Network survivability against component failure is an important issue in WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) optical networks. This includes failure detection, localization and isolation (i.e. protection or restoration). In this paper, we focus on link-based failure localization and protection in WDM networks.

Evolution of WDM in transport networks

OFC '98. Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibit. Technical Digest. Conference Edition. 1998 OSA Technical Digest Series Vol.2 (IEEE Cat. No.98CH36177), 2002
Summary form only given. The initial application of WDM technology in long distance transport networks has been a large success. It solved a severe capacity problem quickly, and at a cost much lower than possible with the alternatives available. This tutorial will examine WDM networking systems, both present and future, from the point of view of a ...

WDM Metro Networks

2021
Abstract With increasing traffic, legacy SONET/SDH-metro rings have mostly been upgraded using point-to-point WDM (PPWDM) transmission. For cost-effective realization, WDM metro networks also employ wavelength-routed optical networking (WRON), where a wavelength is bypassed optically at intermediate nodes.

Crosstalk in WDM Communication Networks

2002
The use of advanced transmission and switching techniques such as reconfigurable WDM optical crossconnects is enabling high capacity and flexible optical networking at ultra bit-rates reaching multi-terabits per second. These techniques also offer creative ways to improve the network connectivity and survivability against any form of link failures. One

WDM network planning and management

2010

Crosstalk in WDM Networks

2002
This chapter presents a general description ofinterferometric crosstalk in WDM optical networks. Firstly, a classification of crosstalk is introduced. Secondly, we describe the crosstalk mechanism in WDM cross-connected systems. Thirdly, the characteristics of crosstalk and the influence on the system performance are analyzed using a simplified ...

An efficient network architecture and protocols for WDM networks

European Transactions on Telecommunications, 2001
AbstractIn this paper we study a single—hop WDM network for a passive star topology, based on a new network architecture that uses several wavelengths as control channels with an appropriate Network Interface Unit at each station for coordination of packet transmissions on the data channels referred to as Multichannel Control Architecture (MCA).
