Modeling snow slab avalanches caused by weak-layer failure – Part 1: Slabs on compliant and collapsible weak layers [PDF]
Dry-snow slab avalanche release is preceded by a fracture process within the snowpack. Recognizing weak-layer collapse as an integral part of the fracture process is crucial and explains phenomena such as whumpf sounds and remote triggering of avalanches

Purpose The investigation on deformation trajectories and damage morphology of bedding rock slopes with weak layers is a prominent concern within the slope engineering field. Multi-field information is instrumental in elucidating the evolutionary process

Experimental study on seismic response of anchorage of bedding rock slope with weak layer
A large-scale slope model is built by pouring for the first time, and the shaking table tests on the similarity model are conducted. The strain of two anchorage interfaces is obtained under the earthquake, and the seismic responses of anchor bolts and ...

Prediction of Weak Topological Insulators in Layered Semiconductors [PDF]
We report the discovery of weak topological insulators by ab initio calculations in a honeycomb lattice. We propose a structure with an odd number of layers in the primitive unit-cell as a prerequisite for forming weak topological insulators. Here, the single-layered KHgSb is the most suitable candidate for its large bulk energy gap of 0.24 eV.

Dynamic response of down-dip multi-weak-layer rock slope under earthquake
The long-term mining of the Fushun West Open-pit Mine has resulted in the exposure of underground rock layers, forming numerous down-dip and weak-layer rock slopes.

Layer-adapted meshes for weak boundary layers
We propose a new class of layer-adapted meshes for weak boundary layers. Especially for fourth-order problems these meshes are extremely useful.

A closed-form model for layered snow slabs [PDF]
We propose a closed-form analytical model for the mechanical behavior of stratified snow covers for the purpose of investigating and predicting the physical processes that lead to the formation of dry-snow slab avalanches.

Weak localization in few-layer black phosphorus [PDF]
We have conducted a comprehensive investigation into the magneto-transport properties of few-layer black phosphorus in terms of phase coherence length, phase coherence time, and mobility via weak localization measurement and Hall-effect measurement. We present magnetoresistance data showing the weak localization effect in bare p-type few-layer black ...

Stress amplification of the landslide slip zone during vertical P-wave incidence based on ray theory
The largest landslide triggered by the Wenchuan earthquake was the Daguangbao landslide, which formed in the preinterlayer structural dislocation zone (weak layer) in the slope.

Weak layer fracture: facets and depth hoar [PDF]
Understanding failure initiation within weak snow layers is essential for modeling and predicting dry-snow slab avalanches. We therefore performed laboratory experiments with snow samples containing a weak layer consisting of either faceted crystals or ...
